        1. No loans are "forgiven," so dx's free rider concern is addressed.

        2. If you do certain work, your loan payments for the duration of your employment at that work are paid for you by the government. That work: public school teacher, nurse, child care worker, paramedic, home health aide, social worker, non-profit employee, pro-bono attorney, pro-bono doctor, public defender. In general, the jobs we really need filled with competent and motivated people which pay poorly or not at all.

So, dx paid back his loans so he has the privilege to work anywhere he wants. That's what he paid for. OTOH, an idealist can go deeply into debt getting a law degree and then not have to pay for it if she becomes part of Gideon's Army. At any given time you can decide to opt in or out of the system -- it maximizes personal freedom. You don't have to "declare" to receive benefit, you simply provide proof that you're working in an approved humanitarian, low-compensation profession.

Work long enough in your field and you never pay a penny in loans. And you're getting a huge reward for doing good works. Note also the government now has skin in the game to get the best loan terms for you, because they may well end up paying for them, so they crack down on predatory lending.
I'm on board with this. I'm going to make one big change though that I think you've already included. No more loan forgiveness for doctors. They don't need it. We need more mental health professionals like therapists. At a masters level, they can be deeply in debt, get paid ****, and have a lifetime to pay for their service in a horribly underappreciated industry and career. Nurses might or might not need it either. You can earn a fairly heavy salary being a nurse. I'm on board with public school teachers, public defenders, and doctors in underserved areas. For people like engineers and doctors and lawyers and such, **** 'em. They earn plenty. There are exceptions like public servants. But if you go into private practice, sorry.

And actually, I'd make one more change:
        1. If you currently have loans, you could qualify for forgiveness as long as you are current on them OR if you aren't current, there can be some exceptions. Not sure how to minimize fraud and maximize benefit to those who need it. Again, I'm not sure how to structure this.
        2. If you've paid back your loans, TOUGH SH--T. You have always had the option to let them go into deferment with the chance that a Warren or Sanders became president... but you didn't. That's a call you made and have to live with.
        3. If you have current loans, the federal government buys all of them, all future student debt is federalized, and the students pay base rate plus maybe a quarter point. No more private student loans to public schools.

Why should any lawyers get help but no doctors? That seems ridiculously biased and misguided. Not all doctors work in private practice making seven figures.

Yeah I think it’s crazy to say nothing for docs.

Some specialists come out with 300k of loans. Unless we want them all servicing nothing but private insurance clients they should be included within reason too . Heck several other nations do this- if you agree to stay in the country, and practice x amount of years in a rural or poor area, loans are forgiven at the end.

Yes, programs like these need to be universal so that they can't be attacked from within.

Why should it cost $300,000 to go to college?
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Between my undergrad and grad school costs, I'll be $150K under by March 2022. For example, I'm attending Denver University online for my MSW, and it will still cost $80,000. Because of this, I'm considering transferring to either Grand Valley or Western, even though it is a 40-60 minute commute at home at night.

As much as I want to make $75-80,000 a year, I don't think social workers of any stripe make that much. To stand a better chance, like PhD in Clinical Psychology or a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, I'd end up deeper in debt.

Look, we need all the lawyers we can get. It's a dangerous world out there. Pretty sure if you forgave all law school debt, a lot of lawyers would be giving their time away, and how cool would that be?

Well, they'd sue you when you're walking on the street
They'd sue you when you're tryin' to keep your seat
They'd sue you when you're walkin' on the floor
They'd sue you when you're walkin' to the door
But we should not feel so all alone
                      Everybody must get sued.

I think if lawyers and Doctors want to be included they should have programs in place like for teachers. Work in certain parts of town (with diverse socioeconomic and racial makeup) and you can get forgiveness. Or if you say do 2 years of Doctors Without Borders or working for Legal Aid qualify for other forgiveness. Incentivize them to work with the less fortunate.

I have a co-worker from France. He says there medical school is affordable, but you make a lower salary as a doctor.

That’s how it works in many countries. Much lower debt and lower salaries. Not super low, but low compared to here
