  • Re: UNH Hockey: Treading Water or Trending Upward

As I write this, Northeastern has scored 3 goals on 4 shots in the 3rd period. Ouch.

Approaching the midway mark of the 3rd, will be interesting to see how UNH handles this ...

Amazing to win a game after the start of the 3rd. Gildon needs to be a healthy scratch for a few games. Turnovers and power play killer the last two weeks. He’s by far the worse player on ice

Way to go, 'Cats!!! Taylor still undefeated, although it's hard not to expect tonight's performance has opened the door for the return of Robinson next weekend. Obviously I wasn't at the game tonight, but Norbert's observations on Gildon not too far off the mark from my observations last weekend. Which is too bad, since his teammates have now cobbled together a neat little 3 game winning streak after the obligatory post-break loss to Army. He could really help lead something potentially special here.

Regardless, happy to see Bandwagon van Beanpot leaving The Whitt on the loser's bus tonight.

Good night for both the SOG camp AND the first goal wins camp tonight, e.cat. Winner winner!!

Most Valuable Wildcat goes to Foster's Al Pike, for the rousing interview of Benedict von Beanpot.

Making quite a difference, eh? Not quite sure exactly what to make of UNH winning FIVE overtime games to date...

Regardless, how about this wild stat - UNH has gone to OT seven times this season and only ONE (!!) game has ended in a tie (5-2-1)...

Yup. First goal camp is key in this one also. No argument here

Seems to me UNH isn't "playing not to lose" anymore - an oft-leveled criticism of MS7's predecessor.

It's still a fairly small sample size, but it's an encouraging trend.

The feed by Blackburn to MacKinnon a thing of beauty and the screen by Stevenson huge!

He praises his time at UNH and his former teammates, but "omits" said praise on the coaching staff....also found it interesting that his decision to leave UNH was "a family decision".
What a baby. If you've got an issue with the UNH coaching staff, just come out and say it.

Instead, we get this delusional, self-absorbed tripe ...

“You always want to contribute and help the team win,” said van Riemsdyk, whose older brothers, James and Trevor, also played for UNH and are now in the NHL. “It can get a little frustrating at times. I’m focused on seeing the bigger picture as long as we’re winning and I’m playing the right way. I just want to win trophies in this game. My role is to be a plus player and keep the other team off the scoresheet.”

Gag. Jeezus, he waxes poetic about winning a trophy/tournament in frickin' November in Northern Ireland, and all of a sudden, we're supposed to consider him the next Mark Messier or something. Note to BvB - it's still frickin' November. I give your older brother crap for being a 3rd line winger on a meh NHL team ... but at least he's in the NHL, and he's a multi-millionaire. And your other brother Trevor seems to be the guy to lay claim to being the "trophy winner" in he family so far. You want to stay in hockey after this season, you say? Suggestion - learn how to tape ankles. Or how to operate a Zamboni, maybe. Putz.

I've always - ALWAYS - rooted for the Huskies in the Beanpot. Not this year, though. Nice work, champ ...

                                UNH Defenseman since Thanksgiving...

                                Maass +8
                                Gildon +5
                                Wyse +4
                                Erikkson +4
                                McKinnon +1
                                Dawson +1
                                Verrier -1

                                Gildon 0-4--4
                                Maass 0-4--4
                                Erikkson 0-2--2
                                Verrier 1-0--1
                                McKinnon 1-0--1
                                Wyse 0-1--1
                                Dawson 0-0--0

Gildon plays big minutes and has still only been on the ice for three of the 12 goals against since the second half began (Wyse and Maass are at four a piece - Wyse in one fewer game - for comparison). He's a +3 dating back to the Army game. Its fair to wish he was scoring more, its fair to worry about the PP and its fair to be critical of specific decisions and plays - but arguing he should be scratched and is the worst player on the ice is completely foolish. He's playing well (as are most all of the D currently), just not exceptional as he was earlier (not to mention over the course of 1-2 games that happens to everyone)...

This game is a perfect example of my theory regarding criticism of the best players. Verrier blows a tire (and gives up a 2 on 1) then immediately turns another puck over and no one says boo. But Gildon doesn't connect on 100% of his passes and isn't perfect and someones arguing to scratch him. Its comical...
