When it goes to 8 they have a perfect solution. Play the QF on January 1 at the Cotton, Rose, Sugar, and Orange. SF and F the following 2 weeks at their own soulless corporate sites.

The Big Four were all that ever mattered. Restore that. Seed the teams 1-8, then map the field according to the home seed:

    Big12 hosts the Cotton
    Pac12 / B1G hosts the Rose
    SEC hosts the Sugar
    ACC hosts the Orange

This year, by the final FBS Rankings:

#4 Oklahoma hosts #5 Georgia, Cotton Bowl, 2 pm ET
#2 Ohio State hosts #7 Baylor, Rose Bowl, 4 pm ET
#1 LSU hosts #8 Wisconsin, Sugar Bowl, 6 pm ET
#3 Clemson hosts #6 Oregon, Orange Bowl, 8 pm ET

What if both the Pac12 and B1G winners are clearly better than the Big12? It happens...
Or if Clemson takes a dive, and the ACC is no longer the best?

It sounds good on paper, but there are details that need worked out.

It's fine, the hosting is just an assignment if the team makes the ranked slot.

So let's take a hypothetical ranking:

          1. Notre Dame (Independent)
          2. Arizona (Pac 12)
          3. Kansas (Big 12)
          4. Indiana (B1G)
          5. Duke (ACC)
          6. TCU (Big 12)
          7. UTEP (Conference USA)
          8. Rutgers (B1G)
          9. Vanderbilt (SEC)

          1. Notre Dame has no natural host so we go to 2.

          2. Arizona hosts the Rose Bowl against 7. UTEP

          3. Kansas hosts the Cotton Bowl against 6. TCU

          4. Indiana can't get the Rose Bowl so we go back to 1.

Notre Dame is more traditionally associated with the Orange Bowl so that is where they play 8. Rutgers.

Indiana hosts the Sugar against 5. Duke.

The SEC has no top 8 and is shut out.

Interesting to see a "second rate" Big 12 Texas team really take it to the Pac12 runner up.

Very much questioning my thoughts to replace OU with someone who would play a better game.... Geez

If it were up to me I'd rewind everything to 1970. Going from the Pac-8 to the Pac-10 was a mistake. Multiple national champions? Who cares? It's mythical anyway.

The whole idea of a national title in football is reification gone mad. There was nothing wrong and many things right with having tons of teams end their seasons happily and successfully. The vampire squid blood funnel and its media lampreys had other plans. Someday we will simply reach out and flick those gnats away.

Agreed. I would also align the Quarterfinals for the traditional bowl matchups. For example, this year:

                      Sugar Bowl: (SEC Champion)
                      1. LSU v. 17. Memphis

                      Rose Bowl: (B1G v. Pac12)
                      2. Ohio State v. 6. Oregon

                      Orange Bowl: (ACC Champion)
                      3. Clemson v. 7. Baylor

                      Fiesta Bowl: (Big 12 Champion)
                      4. Oklahoma v. 5. Georgia

Reseed after the Quarterfinals. Obviously, there would be seasons where the B1G/Pac 12 Champions might draw the short stick (e.g. B1G seeded #1, but has to play a top 4 Pac 12 Champion instead of a mid-teen seeded Group of Five Champion), but they would get to restore the importance of the Rose Bowl.

                      National Champions: 1959, 1963, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1997, 2000, 2016

Alabama has a tendency to drop a deuce in their helmet when playing in non-championship bowl games.
