My favorite band of all time. I am very fortunate to have seen them, I believe four different lineups.

    Gill, King, Allen, Burnham
    Gill, King, Lee, Burnham
Gill, King, Lee, a drum machine (that was awkward for a Marxist band...)
    Gill, Sterry, Allen*, Finnegan

    * Allen actually showed up unannounced and played the gig in place of McNeice. Gill was the only one aware of the switch until they walked on stage. The 9:30 Club gave Allen a 1-minute ovation and he wept on stage. Allen is also brilliant and I hope to see Shriekback someday.

Goddam, that is funky as all hell.

Never got to see them. I was working with a young kid about 15 years ago, we were on the road and he was playing Bloc Party, probably their first record. I said Christ, this is just Gang of Four.

Shriekback are still performing? Remember the first time I ever heard Lined Up, I was like, whoa.

If Lenin had had Go4 they would never have had Stalinism, they'd have had a dance party. And personal freedom.

I did get to see Gang of Four at First Avenue in 2011 - wish I had seen them decades earlier, but at least I got to see them.

They were so hard to categorize which to me is a sign of how wicked they were. Funky New Wave? I dunno but they clearly inspired a ton of artists to follow because you hear them everywhere.

I made this exact argument in an undergrad term paper.

The Cult have put out some decent new records the past decade or so, but it's hard not to go back to this.

If this doesn't make you want to dance, f**k or both you might want to sit the next few out.

Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Here's the opposite: pure distortion and energy, and one of the greatest punk songs of all time, and one of the most intelligent songs about commodified emotion and the death of human feeling in a consumerist society like England (or America). (On the same album, Natural's Not In It is about the exploitation of sex and the loss of intimacy and sincere sexuality under Capitalism.)

You can follow along at home. It took me forever to parse Andy's spoken word underneath Jon's lyrics when I was a kid (no liner notes) but with Genius it's at your fingertips.

Yeah, but that version had none of the danger, energy, or raw sensuality of the original recording.

it's tough growing old. And playing the same song 100,000 times and not getting tired of it.

Listened to that yesterday. Better equipment always helps.

Last time I played that on the computer, both voices were just a garbled jumble. Since then, I've made new speaker cables for the computer system from an old pair I was no longer using, and bought a new 3.5 to RCA cable to connect into my old home theater receiver I use for the computer audio. Now instead on one jumbled mess, it's two distinct voices speaking at the same time. You still gotta listen hard to pick it out, but it's much better resolved now.

I love the Ramones' version of What A Wonderful World. I was singing along to it in my car earlier today and having a whole lot of fun.
