The Cafe somehow hasn't been ruined over the years. It could have become any number of awful things but it kept balanced between having deep conversations and being silly, and between being too destructive and too cliquish. I think that has to do with the focal point of hockey: not just because it's a famously supportive community, but also in having any other major focus of interest. If a board is based on politics then there's never any way away from that: you either argue or you don't participate. Here we have a middle ground where we can just talk college hockey, stay out of the political threads, and (briefly) restore our faith in our fellow humans.

honestly I'm surprised I still visit the forums almost daily. I used to stay away from the Cafe. I was a big Maine fan, had season tickets as soon as I finished grad school and couldn't get free tickets anymore. I went to frozen fours and regions. I'd travel to some away games. During that time I would read most of the threads related to Hockey East teams, follow score updates, etc. Eventually I moved further away and had a kid and life got busy so I started splitting my tickets with a co-worker. Then after many years into Maine's slide into bottom-dweller status, we both kind of got sick of making the drive every weekend and we decided to give up the tickets. I only casually follow the team now and for a while wasn't checking the forums all that often. Then for some reason I started visiting the Cafe more, and pretty soon it became a daily thing.

I'm pretty sick of facebook, and really the only reason I'm still on it is because there are a few companies and adventure athletes I like to get updates from (thinking about switching to Twitter for that). I find the discussions on the Cafe much more interesting than anything I see on Facebook.

Facebook is a press conference for people who aren't interesting.

I'm on Facebook, mainly to share pictures. Also on Instagram, and I'm starting to prefer that over FB. Once there's a viable alternative to FB, I'll take myself off that and move over there. If anything, I'm on social media to share my story and be visible.

That's how I approach my Instagram. But it's pretty boring unless you like staring at the dumb pictures of rocks, asphalt, and light poles I post.

Pretty sure the Instagram account of my dog has more followers than my account, and my dog is 100x better looking than me.

PS. I do enjoy seeing your photos. You look so happy lately despite some of the setbacks. But that's life, it never goes as planned.

Also, I'm kinda in the same boat as Mookie. I have family I keep updated through FB, and friends from back home that FB is the best way of staying remotely connected without having to attend stupid class reunions every year.

Oui. Outing a trans person without their consent is one of the worst things a person can do.

Does "outed" here mean gave her* name or her gender identity? The former is garden variety stupid internet behavior I'd expect from some of our dear departed and not missed miscreants. The latter is... holy sh-t... just evil.

                            * Dumb cis question for MissT or others. What is the correct pronoun to refer to a trans woman prior to her recognition of her identity? Was she a he who became a she? Was she always a she? Or is there no set rule and it is up to her?

We really need to work on getting "they" up to speed.

Yeah, that's insane behavior. You have to be either incredibly clueless or incredibly callous. In many places it's a death sentence, and some of those places are right here in good ol' Murika.

Depends on the person. I was okay with "he/him" until I came out. Now if you call me "he," I will punch you in the nose.
