  • Minnesota Girls High School Hockey 2019-20 Season

The 2019-20 high school season gets underway tomorrow evening with a slate of 15 games. Chief among them is a marquee matchup between two of the top teams in the state, Andover and Edina at Braemar Arena (7:00pm start). The two teams have a total of 15 D1 recruits between them, so for those of you living in and around the Twin Cities this should be a fast-paced and exciting game to go see. Here are the D1 recruits for each team, their position and grad year, and where they are headed:

    Madison Clough (D) 2021 Yale
    Peyton Hemp (F) 2021 Minnesota

While watching the border battle this past weekend it occurred to me that with all the talent on the ice, the most impressive players were products of class A schools. And in addition to Zumwinkle (Breck) & Heise (Red Wing) there was Scobee (Breck) prevailing over last years NCAA championship goalie and Skaja (New Prague) all over the ice giving the Badgers fits, literally, one of them eventually lost her cool.

Here's a more detailed look at the top teams in Class AA - lots of info on many of the D1 commits, in addition to those playing for Andover and Edina.

Congrats to former Eagan High School star Natalie Snodgrass on being named Hockey East's Player of the Week:

Natalie grew up in Eagan, but actually attended Eastview HS. A case could be made that she was an Eagan high school star, but not an Eagan High School star.

I believe Darwitz DID attend Eagan High School. Eastview opened in 1997. Its girls' hockey team has never advanced to the state tournament but Eagan did in 1997 and 1998. I was a close follower of the Roseville Area High School teams of that era (Ronda and Renee Curtin) and attended both of those tournaments. I distinctly remember Darwitz ringing one off the cross bar from just inside the blue line, a remarkable shot for that era.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

MBTC, we were discussing Natalie Snodgrass, not Darwitz. So now we've managed to confuse both the school names and the last names!

Eastview has been to state tourney at least 3 times...all with Snodgrass..

and FWIW, Eastview is a high school whose boundaries take in both Apple Valley and Eagan students, I'm pretty sure she lived within those boundaries.
kids in Eagan can end up in at least 4 different high schools depending on where they live within the city without transferring (Eagan, Eastview, West St Paul, and Burnsville) across 3 different school districts (191, 196, 194)

definitely one that got away if you are a Gopher fan

Indeed they are. They were impressive in last year's State Tournament and have continued that into this year including Saturday's win over Warroad 9-4.
At the outset, we could hang with the dude...

Tonka has had a bit of a downturn (by their standards) these past few years but by all accounts they are back. This upward trend should continue under the direction of their new coach, former Gopher captain Tracy Cassano.
