Not to speak for the league, but my understanding of the rationale is this:

By dividing them up by location, even though everyone plays everyone twice, the format avoids the possibility - at its most extreme example - of Adrian playing St. Scholastica (12 hours by bus) on the first two weekends. Simply put: It cuts down on the travel costs.

I am not aware of a good "hockey" reason for it.
But at the same time, it increases the likelihood that a Lawrence or Marian travels to Duluth or Hancock instead of Mequon or Milwaukee.

A better plan would be to qualify for the tournament by league results, and then (if necessary) adjust matchup to reflect travel distances. You know, like the NCAA does. That way, you get your top 8 teams in the playoffs, and it avoids the situation that puts Lawrence and St. Scholastica in the playoffs, and leaves out Concordiaa and MSOE.

        Re: Ncha 2019-20

SNC scores two goals in the first 6:35 and beats Marian in FDL 2-0

Adrian scores two in the third at home to beat Trine 4-3.

SNC and Adrian meet for what I believe is the sixth consecutive year in the title game.

Wasn't 2014 (the first year of the current NCHA) tCSS v SNC in the Harris Cup final? So seventh straight for the Knights but only sixth straight for Adrian.

Ahh, you are correct. In my mind I confused the 2014 NCHA championship game with the NCAA game.
