        Re: NCHC Pick 'Em 2019-2020

Week 14 honors went to Bronco Hockey Fan and SweeneyHawksHockey, each with 17 points. The standings below include the year end bonus (team scoring most goals in a game, most goals scored in a game by a single team). The suspense was killing me. Should any team score 9 or more I'll update the bonus points accordingly.

        Code:
Rank	Contestant (W/L/SOW/SOL)	This Wk	Points	Bonus	Total	Points %	Games
        1	Siouxfaninseattle (74-45-0-4)	13	226	11	237	.612 123
        2	Bronco Hockey Fan (69-50-3-1)	17	214 9	223	.580 123
        3	TalonsUpPuckDown (70-49-2-2)	16	216 5	221	.585 123
        4	SweeneyHawksHockey (64-55-3-1)	17	199 4	203	.539 123

        8	John J. MacInnes (48-43-2-2)	10	150	13	163	.526 95
Year end bonus scoring (included in this week's standings):

          Re: NCHC Pick 'Em 2019-2020

Bonus questions for the next two weeks:

          1. Conference standings points accumulated by the higher-ranked pairwise team in each matchup entering the weekend.
          2. Same as above, but with lower-ranked teams.

5 points if dead on and minus 1 for each one off either way.

I'm not quite following this one. Do you have an example?

Rats. I couldn't figure out why no one was posting week 16 picks. I suppose it's because I forgot to click the "Submit Reply" button after creating the week 15 update post. I apologize.

Anyway, SweeneyHawksHockey was the week 15 winner with 18 points. The rest of the field each posted 15.

                Re: NCHC Pick 'Em 2019-2020

Sure. Last weekend the higher pairwise team in each matchup was North Dakota, Minnesota-Duluth and Denver, and... I'll say Western Michigan. (Was CC ahead of them Friday morning?) Out of 6 possible points on the weekend:

                Western got 6
                NODAK got 5
                Denver got 4
                UMD got 3

Which means the higher-ranked pairwise teams collectively accumulated 18 out of 24 possible points. So in a way it's a second guess, but in numbers.

This weekend the higher ranked teams going in are Denver, Western, North Dakota and Omaha. Maybe you pick each of those four to sweep, but at the same time, you feel that one of them probably will drop a game and another wins (or loses) one night in a shootout, so the total there winds up being 19-20 out of 24. This little numbers game is essentially a second guess that allows the player to slightly fluctuate, especially if they were on the fence about one of their official picks.

It works best of course, if high-ranked opponents play each other and low-ranked opponents play each other (NODAK vs UMD and CC/UNO this weekend), because if the top half is all playing the bottom half, a quartet of predictable sweeps is most likely, and not as interesting.

                  Re: NCHC Pick 'Em 2019-2020

The week 16 tri-winners each with 18 points were Bronco Hockey Fan, gochiefs, and John J. MacInnes. With only 5 weeks left we're running out of daylight...with so little variability between the weekly scores it's gonna be tough to catch Siouxfaninseattle.

We'll do BHF's PWR standings bonus for this week. Post your questions, I'm sure he'll answer.

                    BONUS QUESTIONS for Week 18:

                    1. Conference standings points acquired by lower PWR teams in each matchup.
Note: Since the WMU/RPI series is non-conference, those games will count as 2 pts for a win, 1 pt for a tie, so 22 pts are maximum possible, not 24)
                    Same 5-point scoring system.

                    2. *Total* shots on goal by WMU against Rensselaer
10 points for correct answer, then -1 scale

                      I'm out
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Nah, it’s just that all of the bonus questions are starting to give me bad flashbacks to math story problems in elementary school. Haha

I'm not a fan of bonus questions, and I'm guessing that SJHovey is not either. When the bonus points available (in week 18 25 points) outweigh the points available for correctly picking the winners (in week 18 22 points) that's too much emphasis on bonus points. BTW, what is the difference between total SOG and average SOG?
Believe it. Earn it. Raise it.

Fair enough. Scratch #3 for Week 18.

But to answer the question: 40 shots Friday night, 25 shots Saturday is 65 total, which averages to 32.5, rounded up to 33.
