The Buckeyes completed the sweep today with a 3-1 win at Bemidji. This is big because even if some may not think Bemidji is that great, we went 1-3 against them last season. Another thing to consider is this Bemidji team recently swept UMD, a team many have picked to finish ahead of the Buckeyes in the WCHA Standings. Getting six points on the road against this team is no small feat. For the Buckeyes, it was Tatum Skaggs lighting the lamp first on a power play goal in the first period. Later in the first period, Liz Schepers scored to put Ohio State up 2-0. The first period ended that way, as did the second period, so the teams went into the third period with the Buckeyes leading 2-0. After serving a penalty Emma Maltais jumped out of the box, took a pass from Gabby Rosenthal, then proceeded to race down the ice on a breakaway and score to give Ohio State an insurmountable 3-0 lead. The Beavers' Abby Halluska got Bemidji on the board late in the game and that turned out to be the final score ... 3-1 in favor of the Buckeyes. Ohio State once again won the shots on goal battle, 29-18. Backup netminder Lynsey Wallace got the start today and stopped 17 of the 18 shots she faced. For those who are not aware, Lynsey is an Army ROTC student, so she plays hockey and also serves our country, an absolutely extraordinary young lady. Here is a nice read about one of her recent accomplishments.

Needless to say, I am thrilled for her that she got a start today and was able to backstop us to a victory. It's nice to know we have a great backup if something were to happen to Andrea Braendli or she is away at one of her National Team camps or competitions. Lynsey's counterpart, Lauren Bench, kept the Beavers in the game by stopping 26 of the 29 shots she faced. Ohio State has a well-timed bye week next weekend as Emma Maltais will be playing for Team Canada in the two-game series next weekend in Pittsburgh vs Team USA. The Beavers will travel to Minnesota to take on the Gophers.

Yes, on Nov. 15. The entire WCHA has next weekend off.

Thank you for the correction, ARM. I don't know why I did not notice that.

Yup. And just as we bemoan "points left on table" in other games, we certainly need to tip the cap in this situation. The six points earned this weekend may prove to be very valuable in the final standings.

BSU is a tough out as you know, so getting the sweep was good work by OSU.

Absolutely, I could not be more happy for the girls that they got the sweep this weekend against a team that has had our number in recent years.

Pretty good game tonight. OSU was on fire in the 2nd scoring first and had oh so many come close to going in and really breaking it open. 3rd period Duluth turned it up and had OSU on their heels most of the period and tied it up 1-1 but gave up a PP goal to OSU for the game winner while OSU withstood a flurry for the last 6 minutes and the extra attacker with over a minute to go scoring the empty netter with 5.5 seconds left!

Final Score From Friday, November 15th
                      Ohio State 3
                      Minnesota-Duluth 1

                      Mid-Season Weather; Mid-Season Form

Winter weather came a little early this year. Snow in Central Ohio doesn't usually arrive in early November. Record low temperatures were recorded across a multi-state area. (lowest high temp, for the date) OK, the weather eased up a bit in time for the series. Still, this week felt like January.

The players were in mid-season form as well. For both teams. Good compete level. Creative playmaking. Healthy shot totals. Determined defense. Stellar goaltending.

Ultimately these teams are competing head-to-head for a high spot in the standings, and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Important stuff. The game was worthy.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

                      Minnesota-Duluth Honorable Mention: Kylie Hanley
Word was that UMD had a couple of top players missing from the line-up. This moved Kylie into the #2 Center slot on the depth chart. Hanley acquitted herself admirably, putting three shots on goal and contributing a blocked shot. Nice to see the former Hopkins star do so well.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Emma Maltais
Emma had 8 SOG to lead all players. The 8th shot was a little unique. Last minute of the game; carrying the puck toward the empty net. Essentially a 2 on 1 rush. With her linemate needing a goal to complete a hat trick, Maltais really, really wanted to make a pass. Curiously, the Bulldog defender opted to take away the pass. Not a bad strategy with a goalie in place. With an empty net, not so much. Emma shrugged, buried the shot, and finished the game.

                      #3 Star: Gabbie Hughes, Minnesota-Duluth
Duluth's top line of Gabbie, Anna Klein & Sydney Brodt fired on all cylinders from start to finish. The crisp, quick release passes created many quality chances. It took a Grade A opportunity, and savvy execution by Hughes, to finally get one by the Buckeye keeper.

#2 Star: Tatum Skaggs, Ohio State
It's not easy to beat an Olympic Gold Medalist Goalie. But Tatum got the job done twice. On the game's opening goal, Teghan Inglis slammed a slap shot off the far post. Teghan had the UMD keeper cleanly beaten, but for the post. But while the post made the initial stop, the perfectly positioned Skaggs slammed home the rebound. Note that the scoring play was actually a 2nd effort, after an initial offensive rush had been thwarted. Keeping the possession alive, Emma Maltais directed the puck to Inglis at the top of the left wing circle. I've already told you the rest.

Tatum's GWG was a tip off a Gabby Rosenthal blast. Madison Bizal started the play by feeding Gabby. Clutch play and a dramatic response, coming just 5 minutes after the Bulldogs had tied the score.

#1 Star: Lynsey Wallace, Ohio State
What's not to like? Calm and well-positioned, Lynsey made all the easy saves, and plenty of tough ones too.

Bulldog pressure was especially intense during a third period power play. A clever UMD timeout halfway through the man advantage let the Bulldogs keep their top PP unit on the ice for the full two minutes. Had they taken the lead at that point, UMD likely would have won the game. But Wallace stood her ground.

Can't remember exactly when it occurred, but one third period save was especially spectacular. After yet another dynamic passing play, a Bulldog forward appeared to have a tap-in goal. Somehow Lynsey got all the way across the goal mouth to stuff the shot. Can you say difference-maker?

Up Next: Rematch With UMD. More Mid-Season Hockey, Please.

Not going to do my usual recap of last night's game because I am late and Pgb has already shared the Three Stars with us. I just want to say I could not be happier for Lynsey Wallace, who has earned some starts recently and has really rose to the occasion.

Today's game was a classic defensive battle with both goaltenders stopping almost every shot they faced. After a scoreless first period, Minnesota-Duluth opened the scoring in the second period on a goal by Anna Klein. Sophie Jaques answered for the Buckeyes later in the period to tie the game at 1. Neither team could light the lamp in the third period or either of the overtime periods, so it went into a shootout. Jennifer Gardiner scored the only shootout goal for either team to give Ohio State the extra point in the standings. With the shootout win, Ohio State gets 5 of the 6 points this weekend against a very good UMD team. Both goaltenders were stingy today with UMD's gold-medal-winning Maddie Rooney stopping 33 of the 34 shots she faced, and the Buckeyes' Andrea Braendli earning 32 saves on 33 shots. Ohio State will go on the road next weekend for a big non-league tilt with Colgate. Minnesota-Duluth will return home to host Minnesota.

My understanding is that Andrea was competing with Team Switzerland over the bye weekend, and returned from the Eastern Hemisphere pretty exhausted. As such, splitting the games between the two goaltenders was partly a function of giving Andrea an appropriate workload, given the exact circumstances.

Lynsey is a valuable member of the team, as she convincingly proved Friday night. But to the best of my knowledge, there hasn't been a change on the depth chart.

Oh that makes a lot of sense. Happy for Wallace to be getting some starts and showing them what she’s got. Thanks!

                                Sweep? No.
                                Sweet? Yes.

OK, the Buckeyes weren't completely successful in that the Bulldogs took 1 standings point back to Duluth. Big picture, though, 5 of 6 points against UMD is a sweet success.

Prior to this weekend, the home crowd at the Ice Rink had yet to see a 3x3 OT period. For most intents & purposes, we're still waiting. During the first 54 seconds of the purported 3x3 session, we actually played 4x3 hockey as the Buckeyes completed a PK. Next, we played over 3 minutes without a whistle; and thus at 4x4. We did get a teasing little taste of 3x3 -- for about 38 seconds.

So the "beloved" shootout procedure was used to break the tie. Keep reading...

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

                                Minnesota-Duluth Honorable Mention: Maggie Flaherty
The UMD Defense was so stingy this weekend, we definitely need to send them at least an Honorable Mention. Any of the Top 4 'D' would have been a worthy choice; I went with #29. In this case, stats were the tiebreaker. Maggie had 5 shots on goal and 3 blocked shots, to lead the Bulldogs in both respects. Yes, a few teammates matched one total or the other; but Flaherty was the only one with the high number in both categories.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Jen Gardiner
When it takes 2 hours, 38 minutes to get to the end of a College Hockey game, you know you've been on a substantial journey. The Buckeyes had their destination in sight when Jen bagged the shootout winner. It took 3 rounds to produce a goal, and that one goal translated into a standings point. Most of the other shooters tried to make a move on the opposing keeper. But the left-handed Gardiner just cruised down the slot, and blew the puck past the Bulldog goalie, inside the left post. The UMD keeper seemed mildly surprised by the quick shot, and was just a touch late with the attempted kick save.

But note that, for this shootout, the Buckeyes shot first. That left the Bulldogs with one more chance to tie. Keep reading...

                                #3 Star: (tie)Gabbie Hughes, Minnesota-Duluth and Anna Klein, Minnesota-Duluth
Duluth's top line was once again a constant threat. On Saturday they broke through on a face-off play; originating from the left wing circle in the Buckeye zone. I suppose you could say Gabbie lost the draw, as the puck was pulled back toward the Buckeye net. But Hughes turned that loss into a win; stepping around her Buckeye counterpart, grabbing the puck, and making a beeline for the OSU net.

The Buckeye goalie made the initial stop, but a wild scramble ensued. Somehow in the tangle of sticks and bodies, Anna got off a shot. That shot caromed off at least one Buckeye defender and wound up in the net.

As it happened, the same 5 Bulldogs were on the ice for both the UMD goal & the OSU goal. That resulted in a statistical oddity: Every Bulldog who hit the ice Saturday finished the game at an even zero in the +/- category.

#2 Star: Sophie Jaques, Ohio State
Interestingly enough, the Buckeye goal also came off a face-off. In this case, Sara Saekkinen won an offensive zone draw. Lined up as the outside wing, Brooke Bink curled into the slot, gaining possession along the way. Drop Pass to Sophie at the point. It wasn't the easiest pass to handle, but it got the puck to where it needed to be. With some Sophisticated Rocketry, Jaques blasted the puck into an upper corner.

Note that the goal came late in the 2nd Stanza; a period in which OSU was outshot by a 2 to 1 margin. The Jaques goal stemmed the tide. Note only did Sophie tie the score, she generated a key turning point in the game.

#1 Star: Andrea Braendli, Ohio State
32 Saves on 33 Shots is a fine outing all by itself. But Andrea really shined when facing Penalty Shots.

Regulation Time Penalty Shot: At 11:22 of the 2nd Period, Ryleigh Houston earned a Penalty Shot. She forced a Buckeye back-checker to take a Hooking penalty, in order to prevent an outright breakaway. On the Shot itself, the right-handed Ryleigh approached the net, then pushed the puck to the right, hoping for a forehand finish. Andrea slid across the crease, and firmly said No. That kept the deficit at one goal, and likely kept the Buckeyes alive. Like the Jaques goal, it was a critical juncture in the game.

Shootout Winning Save:When the ultimate moment came, once again it was Houston vs. Braendli. This time Ryleigh pulled the puck to the left, hoping for a backhand finish. Once again Andrea slid across the crease; and once again firmly said No. Braendli was a perfect 3 for 3 in the Shootout. Overall, she was a perfect 4 for 4 facing Penalty Shots.

Have to admit I felt a some empathy for Houston. But it was Braendli's night.
