            Odd to say due to the score, but Spain survives South Africa 3-1 in their opener. Two PKs and another with SA down to 10 all in the last 30 minutes.

                I understand the reasoning behind delaying an offsides call now that VAR exists, but it does make it annoying to watch.

                Italy had a possible goal taken off after about seven seconds after the original pass.

                Speaking of which, the Italians just took down the Aussies with a goal in the final minute of stoppage time. 2-1.

                    Purely anecdotal, but I feel like continued hyperinflation leading to a potential coup isn't good for a national program, yet Venezeula is now at the best they've ever been. On the other hand, Syria isn't even allowed to play in their own country and they ended up with their best WC qualifying finish ever, so maybe it doesn't affect things all that much.

                        Both these games were terrible and when it is using the Gold Cup squad...saying "it's just a friendly" is a cop out.

                            I think the proper answer is let's wait and see how they do in the games that "matter" during the gold cup. But in some respects, I do think we put too much emphasis on the US team winning games that aren't WCQs or the WC itself. The rest in some respect needs to be about getting the players to used to systems which means mistakes, etc. Let's also not forget that this program has a bit of a dark age group that is really hurting the pool right now. The future looks much better but there is nothing we can really do about the gap that exists right now...

                              But again they were terrible against a team they had never lost to, never been shut out by and Venezuela has never made a World Cup.
                              Friendly or not...that is not a country the USMNT should be losing to...especially on home soil.
