Speaking of, is Blatz still around? One of my most happy Ithaca memories was picking up a case of Blatz at the local gas station in 1981 for $4 including the deposit.

Even better, for such a dirt cheap beer, they had a genuinely beautiful stained glass logo:

It was better than Busch Light Draft, the OTHER beer people drank when I attended tUMD. Pig's Eye bottled was decent (for pzz water). Pig's Eye Lean was worse than Bud Light.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

It is still going, sort of. Pabst has the label now, and has contracted production out to Miller.

I think I remember it had already been at least partially eaten even way back then.

It wasn't really atrocious. It was the most generic beer I've ever had, and I've had Matt's.

The very worst beer I ever had was Piel's Real Draft. In a can it was Schmidt's (not to be confused with Schlitz although that was also horrible), hands down.

Looking back, canned beer in the 70's was likely specifically enumerated in the articles of the Geneva Convention.

Off the top of my head, bad canned beers I had back then:

Ballentine (HS kids would buy this for us in JHS I wish I was kidding)
            Budweiser
Hamm's (I think, that may have been college)
            Iron City (without perforated tops!)
            Miller
Olympia (this was considered very exotic because it was from the west, like Shasta sodas)
            Pabst
            Rheingold (Mets' sponsor!)
            Shaefer
            Schlitz
            Schmidt's
Watney's (this was actually GREAT beer!)

And Schafer is the one coach to have when your hockey team's just won.

You hafta love a beer whose motto is "please drink irresponsibly."

There was just "Beer." Black lettering, white can. IIRC it was made by Miller.

I bought a 30-pack of that stuff for $6.99 about 8 years ago. Wasn't terrible, especially for the price.

Olympia is still all over in the PNW. It's ****e. Spend the extra ยข and go for Rainier, it's pretty decent for cheap lager.

High Life is still the best for cheap-o, though.
Nothing beats an ice cold cheap lager after working up a sweat on a hot day.

Grain Belt Premium, or "Premo" for short. Best cheap beer ever.
