Big time prep and BCHL scorer, and likely 2019 draft pick, Brendan Budy leaves Denver. He played just six games for the Pioneers in the first half and is now in Tri-City (0-3--3 in five games). Budy was a two-year teammate and often a linemate of Angis Crookshank in Langley...

He should be an immediate priority. He's quick, shifty and skilled. Going to be a real college scorer somewhere. Eligible second semester next season...

Budy was not supposed to arrive in Denver until next Fall - but he dropped his plans to play in Tri-City at the last minute when Logan O'Connor (DUs captain to be) signed late with the Avalanche. He was barely 18 years old when the season began...

He's a pure top-six type, but he was beaten out for a role on DUs second line by two older FR in Tyler Ward and Brett Stapley (both very good players themselves). I like Budy better than Ward, but the latter got the first shot and clicked with Stapley and JR Liam Finley.

DU likes to use their bottom six for hard, downhill forechecking, match-ups and specialty situations (PKs), etc. That isn't Budy's game. He's a shifty, creator (for himself and others), who's offensively driven. He played about half the games in the first half rotating into the bottom six and trying to play this style - I would imagine he preferred a more suitable role for his draft prospects (he'll score a bunch in the USHL and go higher) and at his next NCAA stop...

More than anything he's just young - he's ten months younger than Jackson Pierson (for reference). They probably shouldn't have rushed him without an available role that fit his game. Next year he won't be as young and he'll undoubtedly be much stronger and more prepared.

A half season of experience, confidence and added strength in Tri-City puts Budy back on track for his scheduled matriculation path. I have no doubt he's a better fit at UNH - both in terms of style of play and with the availability of top-six ice time. He had great chemistry with Crookshank in Langley and I bet they'd rediscover that rather quickly. At UNH, he plays a top-six role and scores a bunch. He'd be a great pick-up...

It's still weird seeing DU used on a UNH thread for anything other than our recently-retired coach ...

Coach Stewart headed to Montreal this morning. Strange place to look for Finns.

Great place to find the so-called "20 yr. old Canadian freshman" prospects, though.
