Why should anyone care enough about the developing sexual organs of a fetus to invite friends and family over to celebrate/reveal which organs it'll be?
Even the person who created the gender reveal says she has regrets.

My gender reveal didn't happen until age 36. March 14, 2018 was one of the best days of my life.

Reminds me of that scene in the 90s movie Nine Months where the dad, who IIRC is a physician, finds out the fetus is a boy.

Family and friends make sense because they often want to plan a gift to either make or buy. Random strangers, or even the average coworker, it makes no sense other than it's a simple point of conversation that extroverts need to fend off their feeling of unease around people more emotionally stable.

Or maybe that's just my take on that last bit there.

It's an infant. What possible difference does the gender make to what gift you buy?

You can't buy blue for a little girl, it'll confuse her!

The idiocy of these reveal parties aside, is it really such a terrible thing that expectant couples want to know the sex of their unborn child, and share that with friends and family?
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

My wife and I are expecting our first, and we did share with family and friends. That said, it's the strangers and coworkers I barely know who ask and have no business knowing one way or the other, those are the people who bug me.

No. A lot of people want to know, and want to choose traditional male or female names. I don’t think anything is wrong with that.

You can find out their gender to name them. That doesn't mean you need to drag people (who really aren't all that interested in your baby unless it's really ugly or something) to a whole other ME, ME, ME!!! event leveraging your brat to wring that last drop of attention for yourself.

                      It's ridiculous.

They are being polite. It's a thing people ask; they actually couldn't care less and have already forgotten you are having a baby before you even answer. It's like the Monday "how was your weekend?" You could answer "I was abducted by white slavers" and they would just give you a glassy-eyed "that's nice" on the way to their coffee.

I used to ask the guy, "is it yours?" but these days I just walk away.

No, I didn’t say that explicitly because I didn’t think it needed to be said.
My sister is pregnant and simply texted “it’s a boy” and that seemed to work fine

                            This.

My ex-gf and I found out, because we simply wanted to know. We already had a girl's name and boy's name picked out well-beforehand. Friends and family knowing? Sure. But the above post nails it.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

How about people stop worrying so effing much about other people's choices that have no bearing on you? No I'm not talking about idiots that blow stuff up.

You are not forced to attend a reveal party if invited and if it offends you so much don't effing go.

We never did one and would not had it existed but the concept is no skin off my back. Live your life and let others live their own.

Nobody's worrying, we're just laughing when confronted with the immeasurable vanity of our fellow primates.

Don't you worry. Nobody will ever interfere with the inalienable and sacred right of expectant parents to make as-ses of themselves.
