I was there in '00, and there were some American kids there either just graduated from high school or underclassmen in college. The blonde girl started with, "I don't get, why is this so popular? It doesn't look that special at all." Her friend the replied, "Yeah, I know, right!" I'm standing there, looking around the room at all of the works from masters who were da Vinci's contemporaries, 2-d paintings using bright colors, extolling God and the angels. Then there's the Mona Lisa, a simple painting of a woman, using earth tones and showing depth of field for the background. It's amazing that people exist who either don't or can't understand the epoch this painting represents.
