  • New age restrictions for NCAA hockey

I apologize if this is being discussed elsewhere ... but I don't see it.

So the BTHC is trying to set an age restriction for college hockey admittance, down to 20 years of age from 21 (or lose a year of eligibility).

@icehockeystick And it goes without saying how much that would hurt like 90% of college hockey teams

@MikeMcMahonCHN According to CHN sources, informal straw poll among NCAA coaches was 49-11 opposed to the proposed legislation.

@MikeMcMahonCHN The Big 10 proposed this to the NCAA without notifying other conferences, according to CHN sources.

In regards to Mike's tweet about 49-11 voting:

@MikeMcMahonCHN According to sources, all 11 that supported the legislation are big, full-Division 1 schools.

Also, from reading Twitter right now, this is definitely the universal response I'm seeing.

@chnews We're trying to RT both sides of this, but haven't found any supporters yet.

        90%?

@icehockeysick Jashvina is wrong. Probably only 80% are completely reliant on overage Canadians!

What a scumbag move by the Big 10. They don't even have the balls to bring it before the coaches in Naples. There is no way to spin this as anything other than the Big 10 getting their knickers in a twist because they've been relegated to second class status behind HE, the NCHC and the ECAC.

The BTHC obviously can't compete in the current format, so it figures they would try to change the rules.

Reminds me of last year when there were Gopher fans seriously arguing that the Big Ten should be granted two auto-bids into the NCAA tournament.

Would be a good thing for this to pass.

Though the ezac teams and north dakota would be bitter i'm sure, no more 25 year old canadians playing for them.

                What constitutes "big?"

BU is a big school and a big hockey program. However, not a big D-1 overall athletic school.

Can an argument be made that it might benefit a good number of players by providing some incentive to colleges to get them out of juniors a year earlier?

The Big 10 is really getting desperate.

What a joke. Why should a kid that enrolls in school and has athletic eligibility be denied the chance to compete if he or she is qualified. I could care less if you are 16 or 40. BT needs to get over themselves. NCAA shouldn't even dignify this.
