    Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Friday night’s early game of the 2014 Kendall Classic saw the Nooks hold on to beat Wisconsin 1-0. The Nooks outskated and controlled play most of the game, but could not convert on a lot of their chances. The Nooks outshot the Badgers 31-14, but give credit to the Badger goaltender for keeping them in the game. Both goaltenders (Jones for UAF and Peterson for UW) played well.

Saturday’s early game of the 2014 Kendall Classic saw the Nanooks take down Maine 5-2 in workman like fashion. Shots on goal were fairly even but the Nooks were a faster skating club and seemed to have better scoring chances. Jones was in net again for the Nooks and made a number of good stops when Maine ramped up the pressure.

And this shot is in here just because …

Figured it was time to check out of the goal rush thread and back here.

Not the way you want to draw up a sweep, but the boys got the job done. Nanook score 8 goals in the weekend. 4 of them were scored in the final 7:09 of the 3rd period of both games. That's some guts. But they also were way better conditioned than both teams.

How about Austin Vieth??? Unsung hero in juniors, not known for scoring comes in and bags 3 goals and 4 points for the tournament MVP?l. Who saw that coming.

Two tough road tests coming up.

Thankful that we've had some freshmen step up so far this season. Defense this weekend wasn't as strong as it was I think against Wisconsin and Maine but they were able to make it happen and pull off the wins when down on the scoreboard. Still not confident in goaltending, but would have still preferred to see Jones in net Saturday. He didn't move as quick as he did last weekend but everyone has an off night and as a fan I just don't feel as confident in Cahill and Keeney to make the saves when our defense can't clear the puck.

Completely off topic, I really wish new seating would somehow magically appear at the Carlson. Our entire row is broken so it was insanely uncomfortable. Management was aware of it and said the bad ones would be getting fixed soon but it sure would be nice for an upgrade haha wonder how much it is for 4,000ish new seats? Well maybe not even 4,000 if you leave the balcony the way it is.

A sweep is a sweep is a sweep. I thought they showed guts both nights, and I was proud of them. 4-0 in non-conference is huge, both for us and the conference.

I thought Cahill played well last night. The 2nd goal he might want back, but by and large he manned up and made some big saves.

                  Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

'Nooks hit 16th this week in the poll. Effectively in both polls, actually.

Goalies can't stop everything all the time, and the 'Nooks defense is playing very aggressively in the offensive zone. Using their speed to catch up when they're caught on the play. It's worked for them a few times, but that's not something you can fully depend on against tougher teams down the stretch.

Western will be a good test. They're slumping a bit, and the 'Nooks are playing with some swagger. Let's see them keep it going...

                        Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Hope the boys can keep the win streak going, but we have been kind of living on the edge. Four of our five wins are by one goal, and we came back in the third period in a couple of those. Two of our wins are 1-0 shutouts. Something can be said for early season gut check games and confidence builders, but it sure would be nice to see the infamous two goal lead once in a while.

But a great job by the boys sticking to their game plan and never giving up. And a great job by the goaltenders in keeping us in it and giving the boys a chance to come through. Just solid all-around team effort(s) so far this season.

It’s a little surprising we are undefeated given our special teams stats so far and our faceoff %. We are only 3-19 on the PP for about 16%, which needs to improve if we want to keep the streak going. And WMU seems like a team that is willing to give us some opportunities to work on that. The PK is 14 for 16 for 88% so hopefully we continue to do OK there. Too early to tell on that stat.

We need to improve on face offs. We are 149 for 320 for about 47%. We haven’t won more than 50% in any game, and really sucked against Penn State at 39%. WMU is big and physical and we can’t afford to give them opportunities off the faceoff, especially in our zone, and to bang in loose rebounds.

So here’s hoping the boys can complete the road sweep. It will be tough. WMU will come out hard and the Nooks will need to weather the first 10 minutes. We need to utilize our speed and transition game and avoid chippy play. We need to stay out of the box.

                        Go Nooks!

Splitting on the road is not bad, but a bit disappointing nonetheless. It shows that fan expectations for this program have grown over the past few years. Sounded like we played a decent game, things just didn’t quite go our way. The 5 min major and extended 5x3 doomed us. Our special teams are not so special at this point in the season. PP and PK need to improve. And hopefully our goal scorers loosen their grip a bit. We need to capitalize on more of our quality chances.

Would like to see Larsen assert himself more. His size and experience is valuable if the desire is there. But if not, I’d keep Munson in the line up. He makes freshman mistakes, but there’s upside potential. And I miss it when Hajdukovich is not out there. I like his game and think he makes things happen. But I think that about most the boys. Pretty satisfied with team effort and where we seem to be headed. Good job boys. Good job coaches.

Looking forward to our conference opener in Bemidji. BSU may be 1-3, but they played pretty even with both the Sioux and the Gophers. This will be a tough series.

                          Go Nooks!

Bummed we didn't get the sweep, but if you'd told me a month ago we'd go 5-1-0 in non-conference play I'd have taken that in a heartbeat. Those five wins will help both us and the WCHA in February and March.

But, proud of the guys for not showing quit yet thus season. As for this weekend, Western no slouch and Lawson is a somewhat detestable place to play for opponents.

Go get at least three in Bemidji, Nooks.

Lunatics enjoyed having #12 Perry in the box. He's a good sport... Joked around with us and showed respect for the student section. That being said it's about time for the AD to send out their annual "Please stop chanting expletives, you can hear them on the telecast" email to students.

                              Good series, best of luck!

Haha yes, you could hear some bovine fecal matter chants on the radio broadcast. Calling Lawson detestable is a compliment to you; it's a good crowd there. I remember Scott Greenham having some fun with WMU students back in the day.
