Stories like that cheer me up. It's hard to admit a mistake and reverse course as you did. Few have the self-confidence to do it, and most simply continue in denial. Salud!

      • A NY Times interactive graphic showing just how far right the GOP is. And how moderate the Dems are despite being "radical left." Honestly, a new political party of true Centrist/Conservative values would likely pick off most the GOP and a fraction of the Dems.

Let the far right quietly wander into the dark.

          • There aren't any conservatives in the US. The fact that the Nazis took over the GOP so easily is proof of that.

This is empirically demonstrable. The only way fascists are displaced on the right is a massive die-off. Ordinarily these are triggered by the very wars they start.

I question that poll because in the present American political climate of "cancel culture", no one with a career to risk losing wants to self-identify as a racist. Or they're like, "I'm not a bigot, I'd be happy to have a black neighbor - if he's a married, Christian doctor or lawyer." Which is just a less overt form of "darky needs to act more like us white folk" racism.

All the more reason why the US is awful these days. We look bad compared to that.

That link goes well past a poll and I doubt anyone had their name tied to the poll anyway. There has been no shortage of blatant racist activity the past 3.5 years in the US and it's been exposed more than any time in recent memory. The orcs are no longer in hiding despite social media exposing them a damn near daily basis. It hasn't stopped cops from mistreating minorities including murdering them. The band-aid is off.

But I've seen, heard, read and experienced the racism outside the U.S. in my past 30-years of traveling and living abroad enough to without any doubt believe racism and inequality is just as if not worse in countries near and far.

That is not be arguing things are hunky dorey though. The U.S. must be better. But it's not poster-child so many in the U.S. want to brand it as. Focus initiatives and energy discussing how to make it better and not, "WE"RE THE WORST!!".

You've made those observations before, Slap, and they make sense. Racism is a virulent form of tribalism, an evolutionary survival trait which no longer benefits us but which we still tend to share, whichever herd we are in. Your point makes the case for fighting intolerance of all kinds even more compelling.

                            • So, I joined reddit 2 months ago. Since then I have joined and been almost immediately permabanned by 5 different Leftist subs (r/socialism, r/cpusa, r/communism, r/askphilosophy, r/alltheleft) for, among other things, pointing out the PRC commits human rights abuses and that Russia, in 2021, is not a socialist country.

I'm not sure the Far Left in this country is serious.
