I have to admit that I don't follow this thread very closely until after the Engineer season ends.
However, I do check in to see the stats on occasion.
Today I noticed that two of our recruits Wood and DeVito neither one of which tips the scale at over 165 or reaches heights over 5'10" have accumulated 72 and 63 PIM respectively.
Are these just tough guys, or are they trying to prove something. I know a lot of smaller forwards need to stand up for themselves and some actually are the aggressors by necessity.
Has anyone seen these guys play or do any of you know what circumstances have lead to these lofty PIM?

I am not sure about Wood. I don't think that he has gotten into that many fights. On the other hand this video about DeVito says a lot.

As a recent poster said about Melanson, there are a lot of fights in the USHL (but not by DM). http://board.uscho.com/showthread.ph...=1#post5579968

I guess he can take care of himself.
Not too crazy about him running the goaltender.

                      Thanks Ralph,

Having seen Melanson a lot over the years-he not only does not get involved in the fisticuff action-he rarely takes a bad penalty. He does not put his team down a man normally without very good reason. He does draw quite a few penalties however, as other teams try all sorts of things to slow him down a step or two. If i had to be critical I would ask that he put on some pounds and instead of passing take a few more shots himself. He is often just too unselfish out there. Just my 2ยข

I am certainly not crazy about his tactics, but I trust that SA sees something in him that will help the team. It's been discussed here before, but you may not have read it, but Curadi's main talent as a junior player seemed to be getting penalties and he has greatly improved. Also we couldn't figure out what Mark Miller's roll was going to be at RPI based upon his stats in the USHL, and he has contributed a lot already this year.

Well, that is certainly true. He rarely takes a bad penalty, and he rarely takes a good penalty as far as I can see.

With our recent history of special teams play-give me kids who do not put us short handed and who can also score on the power play when we get a chance. I don't know if Melanson has been doing that this year but throughout his high school career he rarely put Delbarton shorthanded and he had a part in a bunch of power play goals for them. If he can translate that to Troy, I would be a very happy guy.

I completely agree Ralph. I have no idea what to make of this kid, but it could be as simple as Seth liking the toughness and attitude the kid brings. I don't mean the fighting, but the edge, and check finishing attitude that keeps players honest. Some kids you know are going to take your head off if you try certain moves on the ice..this kid is one of them. Having a kid like this in practice everyday will benefit our guys.... With the skill we're going to have on board when he arrives, it will be good to have a kid who keeps the other team honest, IMO.
