Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I am surely disappointed with the tie but I'm also not going to read too much into it at this point. Union bounced back from the last Uconn game which was a worse tie IMO when we gave up a 3-0 lead. I am somewhat concerned that Union could not adjust to the tactics employed by Uconn apparently packing in the D and forcing Union into a lot of long range perimeter shots. I did not get the impression that we were doing a lot of net crashing and working hard in the "dirty" areas. I'm sure other teams will consider the same tactics to neutralize our speed and passing game, particularly the bigger teams, like Uconn.

In general it still seems like the coaching staff is still searching for the right line combinations. I'm also not sure if Troy is as sharp as he was last season but if not he will come around especially if he has Stevens pushing him.

The loss of Ghost would loom large but this is a deep team which would reduce his loss somewhat.

You guys have to understand that UConn suddenly has scholarships in their program, so this isn't as bad as you might think. It does look like most of the scholarship players are freshmen with a few scattered to the other classes, so they aren't up on the learning curve just yet. But this was not a UConn team like the recent past. I would be surprised if they were not near the top of the AHA as soon as they get going, say after the holidays. In two years time they will be in HE and that transition has already begun.

Union drops to no. 10 in both national polls. http://dailygazette.com/weblogs/scho...a-hockey-poll/ I am actually a little surprised that they stayed in the top 10. They got another first place vote again...go figure.

And surprisingly, Schott isn't the one giving the first place vote.

In his "College Hockey Slap Schotts" weekly posting, he said he's never heard Bennett as angry was he was after the UConn game.

U recruit Mike Pontarelli was not selected to Team Canada East for WJAs.

He is showing at "inactive" on the Cornwall website. I am missing something here? Injured? http://cjhlsite.stats.pointstreak.co...&seasonid=9216

It looks like he's listed as inactive because he was at the WJAC camp. His two other teammates who were at the camp are also listed as inactive on the roster. It's a bummer he didn't make the team. It would've been nice to see how he stacked up in the tournament

It always strikes me as a tough thing for a player. That is , drop everything/leave your team and travel for a 2 1/2 day tryout, competing against a bunch of other talented kids, 2/3 of whom also won't make the squad. Pontarelli is legit - U has a good one in him, IMO. WJAs or not.

According to his Twitter, Pontarelli is now back in Cornwall. I'd guess he resumes playing there any time now.

My previous post was incorrect...that's what I get for believing the Colts' website. Colts beat Nepean 3-1, Pontarelli nets two in his return...coach commented him on his tryout performance. Apparently he was stuck in a bit of a numbers crunch, due to a limit as to how many '93s they could select (5)...
