Did the $6 million check handed to Ben Barr a couple of months ago go into the "Standbrook fund created by Red Gendron"? I am seriously dumbfounded by Maine fans and sports media alike that this very public exchange that took place at Alfond has been swept under the rug. I'm not saying that...
Considering that the Alfond Foundation handed Barr a $6 million check a couple of months ago.....probably not at all. 7% of the athletic department's budget is about $2 million......$6 million should cover $2 million nicely.
This is getting to be a tired trope. Wake me up when hockey alums throw their support behind the hockey program as much as football alums have done over the years.
Let's not forget that Maine recently received a $16 million donation from the Labat Family Estate that was directed to athletics but not necessarily facilties.....and the mystery $6 million Alfond donation to hockey. Let's hope that they used/will use this money wisely considering all of the...
I can't believe I am again agreeing with much of what you say.
Agreed on Barr....and also agree that recruiting is a more immediate concern. It figures that Maine finally gets gold plated athletic facilities and at the same time the goal posts are moved in a major way with NIL which now has...
You bring up some good points.
Regarding the Alfond funds.....yes, the donation was for facilities but I don't think the foundation micro-managed the use of those funds. In other words, UMaine administrators chose what type of facility improvements would be built. I have a bit of frustration...
No cutting football program until we have a clear accounting of the $6 million check that everyone in attendance saw exchange hands from Alfond Foundation to Ben Barr.
Again for the umpteenth time......WTF happened to the $6 million check that Greg Powell of the Alfond Foundation handed Ben Barr at the Alfond dedication ceremony?
This program needs to get back to basics. I think that the hype surrounding the new facilities and overall media hype of this team as gotten into their heads....one way or another. And Barr needs to pull up his big boy coaching pants and not make rash personnel decisions like he did tonight...
I actually agree with you that recruiting is an issue. I know that $$$ is a the overriding factor in recruiting now but I'm shocked that Barr hasn't been able to reel in a couple more top recruits....not everyone is going to Penn State or BU. Maine checks the boxes on facilties, fan base...
A donor at Providence is stepping up......a 100% match would create a $6 million fund to pay players if I am reading this correctly.....they have until Dec. 31 to make a donation.
