I think success this weekend will start with our 7 defenders (assuming Phelan is extra skater). I forget who said but someone mentioned they think we have the best 7 d-men in the country, and I think that could well be true, and this is the weekend to show it. Obviously you have to slow down...
I don't disagree about getting Idzan more ice time, but I think Hastings really likes what Botterill has been bringing to the 2nd line right now, and I don't see him getting moved down. Hastings has also mentioned specifically recently how he likes the Zelenov/Kukkonen/Montgomery third line, so...
Yeah, Michigan looks scary this year I will admit. However if we take care of the puck and beat them physically there's no reason it can't be a competitive series.
On a different note, this freshman class has been fantastic. Tulk and Montgomery have met my expectations as high-end CHL players...
One more note I have that I haven't seen anyone mention yet: our PP has been fantastic so far. 32%, top 5 in the country right now. They've been so good at winning the initial faceoff, keeping the pressure on, and getting really high quality chances, even on those we don't convert.
I really think that was one of the best games I've seen over the past few years, considering the rivalry. I thought out top 6 really took control of this game, bottom 6 did their part as well, and the defense and goaltending did (mostly) all you could ask for. There's a lot to like right now...
Re: weekend takeaways
I second everything said about Hauser, he was a lot of fun to watch. I know the shootouts don't matter, but him standing on his head in both games and beating Tracy has got to give him a lot of confidence. I also have really liked both Tulk and Osburn. Hard to tell but I...
Thoughts from attending the game:
Defensive core looked pretty good, without Hensler (don't think he has any serious injury, Hastings mentioned sitting a few guys who were bruised up). Lots more defensive involvement in the offensive zone as well. Luke Osburn specifically looked great I thought...
It was good to see them take care of business this weekend. Before this, last series sweep at all (excluding holiday faceoff) was Penn State in November of 2024. Last straight sweep with no OT games was Notre Dame in February 2024. Last non conference series sweep Michigan Tech in October 2023...
It's important to start strong against Lindenwood here this weekend. If they can be better against the bad non conference teams they'll have a lot of breathing room compared to last year. If we can finish say 4th in the conference and clean it up against the independents I would be very happy...
Todd Milewski was asked on twitter about online streaming for this weekend, and he responded saying that he was told they will be streamed, but he's not sure where yet. Sounds like Lindenwood will have their own stream.
Thats annoying... with Lindenwood being an independent I'm sure that makes broadcasting difficult to coordinate, but I feel like there should be some requirement for a D-1 team to broadcast or stream their games somewhere.
It's going to be important to get a good start as well. The October schedule is Lindenwood, Mankato, Alaska, then the gophers. They should be heading into the Minnesota series 5-1 or better.
A few related notes:
A) I think Finley is completely healthy now, he was a full participant at the Islanders dev camp, and I think word would have trickled out by now if he was dealing with any sort of serious injury.
B) I have a theory that Finley was playing extremely relaxed defense last...
Two big factors (I think) on the chance of having a successful season:
1) Simon Tassy and Christian Fitzgerald having bounce back seasons. Those two combined for 52 points in 23-24, yet only 28 points last year.
2) Defensive health, I particularly have Zach Schulz and Joe Palodichuk in mind...
Daniel Hauser is a Canadian who played last year as an overager for the Wenatchee Wild/Calgary Hitmen. He was pretty good all year long, but got hurt in April/May and was bad in the one game he started in the playoffs.
Eli Pulver is a sophomore transfer from Minnesota State. Seemingly a...
Season starts one month from today at Lindenwood. What do we think the plan at Goalie will be? I noticed in photos shared online today that Daniel Hauser looked to be participating in practice, with his shoulder surgery I believe a delayed start to the season was (may still be?) on the table.
Haha. But seriously, not a great schedule. Much worse than Penn State’s which caused a stir. I was hoping they would schedule an Ecac or hockey east team, but I guess I’ll have to deal with Minnesota state and 3 independents.
Well, you had the right idea. Last non conference series will be Alaska Anchorage January 9th & 10th. Not a strong schedule overall, I would be disappointed if the team doesn’t win 7-8 of these …
