Climate Change: This Rock Will Soon Be Uninhabitable

So....17 is still less than "hundreds," yes?

Climate Change: This Rock Will Soon Be Uninhabitable

Of course - language matters, and Trump wields it to belittle and demean. When you say "windmills" people imagine cute little gristmills in Holland, not 500-foot diameter marvels of engineering.

Climate Change: This Rock Will Soon Be Uninhabitable

You lie. Here's a link that shows the maximum rainfall amount for a single day for New Orleans going back to 1898. Note that only 4 our of those 110 years (that have data) had a day with 10+ inches of rain. There have not been "hundreds of systems" like this over the last century...

Climate Change: This Rock Will Soon Be Uninhabitable

Weeeelllllll…. I don’t think those 250,000 rivers are really independent trials. If I’m flooded, there’s a good chance that the rivers to my left, right, upstream, and downstream are all flooded, too. Still, I agree with your larger point that unlikely events are not as rare as they seem!

Dump Term 2, Part 2: "A third term would be a big shattering."

"Do you have a message for the families" is a gotcha question only if you don't give a shit about the families and have spent less than a nanosecond thinking of something nice to say.

Antiwork 2: No One Is Getting A Pay Raise

One of my grandfathers retired at 55 after his company got bought out by a big corporation. The other, veterinarian, “worked” well into his 80s, mainly treating friends’ cats and dogs from his home office. He also regularly held vaccination and spay/neuter clinics for the neighborhood. After...

Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

Tesla is the groceries.com of EVs. Yes, the automotive future is EVs (just like the post dot-com world was online shopping), but those EVs are going to be made by Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, VW, etc, just as online grocery shopping today is dominated by Kroger et al.

The 2024 GQP Thread: Because Deutsche Gopher Fan ENDED the Last One

At this point, the easiest path is probably just to commit some jaywalking and get yourself deported somewhere. I’m naturalized, if you squint back 7 generations….

Dump Term 2, Part 2: "A third term would be a big shattering."

The shocker is that they really are going forward with killing F-35, which should have been your poster child for "highly public, obsolete, behemoth projects." Recommended buy in the president's 2026 budget is just 47 deliveries next year, down from a projected 74. Back when I was on the...

Dump Term 2, Part 2: "A third term would be a big shattering."

This randomly showed up on my facebook feed from a high school friend. I'm sure neither he nor the creator have any idea just how appropriate that UNH sweatshirt is....

The States : red states in a race to the bottom

When we were looking at moving to Sweden, it was 15 months paid leave....but the birth mother could only take 12 of it; the other partner (if there was one) was eligible for whatever she didn't take. At 12 months, the children were eligible for fedrally subsidized day care that cost...

Things you've learned as a parent...

One of my favorites happened when a friend of mine had his 3rd. She arrived a little earlier than expected, so my friend had to rush from work and showed up to the delivery room in his work clothes. After many hours on his feet, his arches were absolutely killing him - but he couldn't complain...

Space Exploration II: Always Looking up

I don't disagree with this at all....my surprise is just that the Dragon side of the business has managed to keep Musk from, well, musking it up. It would be like Boeing is having success on 747 and disaster on 737 at the same time. Even though Dragon is "done," it still takes a lot of...

Space Exploration II: Always Looking up

Yes, and.... it's strange to me that the Dragon contingent of SpaceX continues its remarkable run. 75 launches so far this year alone, with every payload making it to orbit and just one failed booster recovery. All told to date, 500 successful payload placements out of 503 attempts. Much as I...

Dump Term 2, Part 2: "A third term would be a big shattering."

Tax breaks for the rich? Not great Government service cuts for the poor? Terrible Deporting immigrants without due process? Abominable Detaining US citizens due to accent, skin color, or associations? Deplorable But now Trump has crossed the line. I'm done. Don't call my babies ugly.

    The Parade thread

My god - do we still use tanks from WW2? (Edit: just noticed this comment, which is way better: "Guaranteed those tanks were to troll trump. They were first manufactured somewhere between the Civil War and the Mezosoic Era.")

The States : red states in a race to the bottom

Wayne Ivey is my sheriff - Brevard County, FL, also the full-term, live birthplace of Moms for Liberty. Yet, even here in “ruby red” Florida, a Democrat with a Jewish name (Vance Ahrens) got 46% of the vote in a state senate special election on June 10, so we can definitely do this….
