Quinnipiac Bobcats 2026-27 - Cherry Blossom Special

Spent the $13.00 to watch the game on B1G+. Definitely worth the money. Team looked good and PSU is not very good. Last night I ventured down the parkway to the SHU v. OSU game. If SHU is a top 15 team, I like our chances to make it to DC. OSU and SHU were both horrible. The arena on the other hand, beautiful. Concessions blow QU away. QU needs an upgrade there.
I wish I was home to get the game but glad to see they played a good game and won.

I have not been to SHU but have only heard good things about their venue. QU can definitely use an upgrade in concessions. They basically got rid of everything I like (Ice cream , fries etc.) and what's left is just not worth the money. I do like you can take one drink back to your seats that is a definite plus.

It's Gameday in Hamden!

The Black Knights come to town for the first time in forever. Well, not forever, but for the first time since March of 2005. For point of reference, this almost 40 year old poster, was still in his senior year of high school. On that night, the last time these two have faced off, QU blanked the Black Knights 2-0 in the Atlantic Hockey Quarters behind a 22-save shutout from Jamie Holden.

Albeit, we haven't had a matchup since prior to Hurricane Katrina, shortly after the launch of YouTube and in the midst of the NHL's only full-season lockout, Quinnipiac holds a 13-7-1 edge all time.

Army lost their opener at home to Union, but followed it up with an impressive road sweep of conference foe Holy Cross last weekend. Army does not seem to have any question in net with three year starter JJ Cataldo manning the crease. Cataldo garnered some preseason conference Player of the Year nods, so he'll be direly needed tonight and we've seen headstanding goalies surprise in the past. Definitely can't look past these guys to our date with Providence on Halloween.

In lieu of standouts from previous matchups (those guys are well into their colonoscopy years and it's doubtful many current forum friends would recall the names), I wanted to take a look at QU's performance against current & recently defunct Atlantic Hockey foes, yes even Bobby Mo, AIC & Mercyhurst.

Since COVID, it's important to note that Quinnipiac has only played Holy Cross, SHU, and a few with AIC (seems that Stonehill and LIU filled that comparable foe schedule slot in many instances).

Here's the tally since Army and QU last met, painting a picture of what the Cats have done against Atlantic Hockey over that timeframe:

Air Force: 1-2 (We'll always have the UConn Holiday Classic in Dec. 08)
Bentley: 9-0
Canisius: 4-0-1
Holy Cross: 18-0-1 (MarkEagle will recall the one blemish there. We didn't speak the entire ride back from Hart that cold December night in 2009)
Niagara: 2-7-1 👿
RIT: 4-1
Robert Morris: 10-5 (A lot of that when RMU was CHA)
Sacred Heart: 6-1 (At least UConn or Yale didn't win the 2020 CT Ice)
AIC: 16-1-1
Mercyhurst: 0-1 (2005 Atlantic Hockey Final)

Overall: 70-18-4

Army deserved that win. Rand's terrible postgame presser answer annoyed me more than the loss tbh. Team and coaches seem to have eaten the rat poison about how great they are on paper

life sucks and then you die. onto next week, Providence awaits.

And Kirsch didn't help either...

He wasn't the issue in my opinion. His defense hung him out to dry a lot of the night. That is the biggest issue right now is the defense has way too many lapses. The first goal off a turnover at the blue line by Dylan Edwards breakaway goal. Goal #2 on PP which the Bobcats have been horrible at killing penalties this year. Goal 3 on a ridiculous angle shot. It was only goal 4 where multiple rebounds were let up but that play shouldn't even happen if the officials call a blatant trip right before that. Look Quinnipiac didn't deserve to win this game. They slept walked the entire time and thought talent would win out. Can't do that against anyone. I hope Rand eats them alive this week in practice.

Fully agree. Don't blame the refs. You didn't play well.

The chances were there, at least. CHN's expected goals had it 3.7 to 2.1 for Quinnipiac. The PK is the real problem: 7 power-play goals allowed on 22 chances. That has to get fixed before Providence comes in.

Well, tomorrow is an excellent chance to get the bad Army taste of their mouth. A completely unacceptable performance... lethargic, and presumptive. No better chance to leave that one in the rear view than a top ten clash against the undefeated, #5 Friars.

We saw Providence technically twice last year, losing at their place early on in an exhibition and then knocking them out of the tourney in the first round 5-2 in Sioux Falls. Quinnipiac has only played Providence three times since 2013-14, a time when they were facing off almost every year. Providence has a slight 4-3-1 edge on QU in their history, not counting exhibitions. Let's take a look at some top performances.

Three Stars
  • David Marshall (12/5/2008) - At the Bank, Marshall potted a goal and added two assists, a +3 on the night in Quinnipiac's first ever win, 5-2, over Providence.
  • Eric Hartzell (11/20/2012) - At Schneider, Hartzell turned away all 24 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over the Friars.
  • Antonin Verreault (3/26/2026) - With the bright lights of the NCAA tourney on, Verreault was a +3 and added a goal and an assist in last year's 5-2 win.
Honorable Mention: Sam Anas (11/27/2013) - 1 G, 1 A in 3-3 tie, Connor Jones (11/20/2012) - 2 G in 2-0 shutout.

Awesome game from Kirsch today. If he can play consistently at that level, watch out! The one goal he gave up looked like interference but for some reason Rand didn't challenge.

Nice to see Cerbone get some goals. The hatty was nice. Stockfish with another missile from the dot and Verrault with a nice display of patience.

The only bad mark today was the 31 shots allowed. We need to tighten up defensively.

League play starts Friday in Ithaca.

He was definitely shielded on it and I believe it was redirected too. Kirsch is firmly the number one goalie right now. You may see Applebee against Colgate but after that his next game if any would be against SLU in December. Or Rand can just ride Kirsch the rest of the way because he’s far better.

Great win from the team. Stockfish has begun to cement himself as one of the most important players on the roster- the glue for the offense. Kirsch has been electric as well, if he keeps it up, we might be wondering if he comes back to college next year.

unlikely tbh… sharks usually don’t rush their prospects so i doubt he’d be one and done esp as a goalie. if he leaves it’ll be because he doesn’t like being in school more than anything else, but it seems like he’s having fun so far. i wouldn’t worry about it yet (while he’s sharks property at least)

If any goalie is going to leave after the year, it’s probably Rorke Applebee into the transfer portal.

ECAC play is upon us with the Cats heading to Ithaca and Hamilton this weekend to take on #16 Cornell (1-1) and Colgate (1-7). Obviously, the game of the weekend is Friday night as any time to step into Lynah, there’s a little more at stake. Cornell started their Ivy-delayed season with a split with SHU. Colgate is off to their worst start since 1992-93.

Lots of obvious history here, especially with the Big Red. Quinnipiac has won their last two visits to Lynah including a 4-1 win last year. However, Cornell has taken 7 of the last 10 head to head meetings at the old barn and Q comes in with a 22-29-6 all time mark against the Big Red (12-15-1 all time at Lynah). Despite Cornell’s recent home dominance in the series, it’s important to note that neither team has swept a home and home since 2021-22 when Cornell won at home and on the road.

As for Colgate, Quinnipiac owns a 36-22-3 all time edge and has gone 13-6-1 over the last 20 meetings including winning the most recent three. Last year QU went to Hamilton and left with a 5-1 win and are 5-4-1 in their last ten meetings at the Class of 1965 Arena (don’t love that name).

VS THE BIG RED

Three Stars
  • Andrew Taverner (11/7/2025): Taverner scored twice and added two helpers in QU’s 5-4 OT win over Cornell at Lynah.
  • Michael Garteig (11/8/2014 & 2/6/2015): The last time QU swept a season series with Cornell was in the 14-15 season when Garteig blanked the Big Red in both reg season meetings, stopping a combined 38/38 shots. Garteig also posted a 23 save shutout the year prior. Miss that guy.
  • Bud Fisher (3/9/2007): Bud pushed aside all 23 shots he faced in 1-0 OT ECAC Quarters victory and still tells Carrie Underwood about it to this day.
Honorable Mentions
  • Kevin Bui (3/17/2013): BUI! Scores the game winning goal in double overtime to beat Cornell 3-2 in the ECAC Quarters at home.
  • Brandon Wong, Dan Travis, David Marshall (11/18/2006): All tallied two points in QU’s first ever win over Cornell, 5-2 at the NIP, much to the dismay of the traveling Cornell band who must’ve thought they stumbled into a high school game/barn.
  • Collin Graf (11/17/2023): Graffer potted two and added an assist in an 8-4 win over the Big Red at home.
  • Ben Arnt, Connor Jones, Travis St. Denis, Kellen Jones, Dan Federico (3/16/2013): In a game that saw the Bobcats blank the Big Red 10-0 in Game 2 of the ECAC Quarters, and a game where 184 penalty minutes were given out, Arnt, Connor, and Feds all contributed four points while TSD and Kellen added two goals and an assist each.
  • Eric Hartzell (3/12/2011): Continuing the trend of epic goaltender performances against Cornell, Hartzell stopped all 24 shots he faced in a 1-0 ECAC Quarter win at Lynah.
If time permits, we’ll take a look at some Colgate historical standouts tomorrow. Go Q!

Reid Cashman celebrating with the students who made the trip to Lynah after we swept them in the 2007 conference quarters remains a core memory. The fight after Wong scored a huge goal right in front of us ... the chants we took from the Cornell student section ... some great memories from that series at Lynah.
