I'm probably missing something here, but couldn't Andy Beshear just call the Special Election and force the hand here for "proof of life"?

No. Republicans neutered his ability because they were afraid of just that because he's a Democrat. Problem is, their method would now trigger a special election to fill the seat and McConnell is now deeply unpopular and would be a crap shoot to hold the seat. By keeping Mitch a slab of ice in the morgue until August 4th, they can then roll the special election into the general in November.

God love us, I don’t think his seat is turning blue, but special elections are the place for crazy results to happen. As for the dates, they’re September 1st and September 8th, the former date being the day Andy can send out the special election proclamation that’ll see it held on the same day as the general election, and the latter date the last day for special election candidates to file.

Sad the timeline we’re in has me believing TMZ’s reporting as much as WaPo, who I saw report it next. My wife told me a while back that TMZ were sending reporters to DC to cover more politicians (not necessarily policies or politics), so that tracks.

TMZ is more trustworthy because they lack a political agenda. They are just there for the dirt and they'll publish it from anybody, but they're the sleaze genre's gold standard so they research and confirm like... actual journalists.
They're nihilists with a blowtorch, but that gets you more truth per seconds streamed than the go along to get along access journalists at (list every other media operation).
 
Concerned Suzies office in Biddeford was stormed today after the ice killing. I hope none of the protestors actually thought she would be there.
