2026-27 Penn State Nittany Lions

I think it helps when the first games are against bottom teams that are barely D1.. RNU, LIndenwood, Syracuse, RIT. It is a lot easier to play stickney in those games. If they were in the WCHA and had to face Wisconsin and Ohio it would be different. Sticky and Campbell will both have no issues against those teams.

Canadian goalies are in a different boat than the US goalies because Canadian college is less than a half ride in the US so it makes financial sense. For example compare $35000 US out of pocket compared to out of pocket $20,000 cdn. It's a bitter pill to come to the US and ride the pine and then you have to add the exchange rate of 1.35.

The BK selects goalie is the first player from that program since Butze.

Penn State plays Ohio State the last weekend of September. I assume that is their 'opening weekend'.

Spent time with Katie DeSa after the USA Hockey Goalie and Defense camp in May. Delightful young lady that was so complimentary of her time at Penn State and with the entire PSU staff. She says Stickney is the real deal and she had just been with her for the past three days.

Penn State has released its 2026-27 schedule: https://gopsusports.com/sports/womens-ice-hockey/schedule

Out-of-conference opponents this season are Minnesota, Ohio State, St. Lawrence, Boston College, Princeton, and Cornell.
Ohio State for two to start the season. That's ambitious!

Absolutely, and I always love the most challenging out-of-conference schedule Jeff Kampersal can put together. This is going to be a whole different team without the talented senior class that just graduated (and got drafted). No more Janecke, etc. That's no fun, for sure, but I'm really anxious to see what this 2026-27 team does. They've all enjoyed conference championships already, so they aren't untested. It should be an interesting season.

Penn State got its eighth incoming freshman in Sydney McIntosh (https://onwardstate.com/2026/07/06/...mcintosh-commits-to-penn-state-womens-hockey/), making this one big freshman class in 2026-27. With the two transfers, Penn State will now have 10 new faces this season.

Needless to say, the graduating seniors left a massive hole to fill, in terms of numbers as well as talent. It's going to be interesting to see who steps into the team leadership role left by Tessa Janecke. The only senior on the roster will be transfer Ashley Kokavec from Vermont. The sophomores and juniors know what winning is like, and they know what the national tournament is like, so that's a big plus.

How does a late add usually work? She was committed to UBC, do you think she gets scholarship money?

EDIT she played a few years at Shattuck, so assuming her family has no problem affording it.

That's a layered question: there are athletic, academic, international and private scholarships. Just like at any academic institution there are also grants and then I'm not sure if it is possible at Penn State, but I have heard other institutions giving the in state tuition rate to out of staters which would be a half ride right there.

This late in the game they don’t usually have scholarship money left. In state, we are talking 15k USD which is not cheap, just for schooling too.
Compared to a Canadian education, which could be free at UBC considering she is from BC and seemed to be a top recruit… I also noticed her brother plays ACHA at UNLV so strong possibility the family can afford it! Which, living in the us, there are lots of families here that shell out 100k a year for college (which is crazy).
