Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

What did Maine get penalized for?
A mix of things we did, a lot of things we didn't do, and ironically we got away with things we did but the NCAA ignored... I used to have a website that had all the charges from the NCAA, Maine's response and my analysis, but it's lost to time. Even the Wayback Machine doesn't have it.

It was a huge overreaction and something that simply wouldn't happen today.

No, we self-reported. It was actually a friend of mine who found the original error, which was laughable, and probably would never have been discovered if we hadn't turned ourselves in. If that was the extent of the infractions, I doubt the NCAA would have done anything. But once we won the title in 1993 the NCAA started sniffing around and found so much more, and it went well beyond just the hockey program.

Had we been Miami or North Carolina or Pedo State, we would have been fine. But we were Maine, so there were no negative repercussions for the NCAA and they buried us.

Yes definitely depends on who you are

Expecting long odds here, but has anyone ever found video online / have VHS of the comeback vs. Harvard in 04? I can never seem to find anything and have always wanted to watch. Feel like it doesn't get talked about enough.

Maine will not have a home game on 10/3 with a 3:30 start for football. Maybe they do an exhibition on 10/2 or 10/4.

My final predictions:

10/9-10/10 - Stonehill
10/16-10/17 - @ Wisconsin
10/23-10/24 - Quinnipiac

And I'll say Bentley or Long Island for a Portland game in December.
Trick or treat at Agganis......@ BU 10/30-10/31. My OOC schedule prediction is still alive.

No BTHC teams this season.
Unless you have inside info....Wisconsin & Notre Dame have not released OOC schedules yet.

This is what I have left for October weekends:

10/2-10/3 (3:30pm football home game on 10/3):

Bentley
Colgate
Holy Cross
Notre Dame
RPI
Robert Morris
Stonehill
Wisconsin

10/9-10/10:

Army
Bentley
Omaha
Quinnipiac
Robert Morris
Stonehill

10/16-10/17:

St. Lawrence
Union
Wisconsin

10/23-10/24:

Alaska
Army
Colgate
Notre Dame
Quinnipiac
St. Lawrence
Wisconsin

Still sticking with Stonehill 10/9-10-10, @ Wisconsin 10/16-10-17 & Quinnipiac 10/23-10/24.

Bentley in Portland in December.

As I recall with the Jeff Tory situation that was exactly the case. Walsh brought in Tory knowing he was academically ineligible and received a 5 game suspension. BU's Jack Parker had tried previously to recruit him and found out that he was ineligible. Walsh later received a one year suspension mid- way through the 95-96 season.

So Parker the snitch

I always hated that situation because Jeff wasn't the stereotypical dumb jock. He just got terrible advice in high school that meant he wouldn't be eligible for the NCAA. It was either Parker or Woog (Minnesota) who saw in the box score that Tory had played against Providence, knew he was ineligible and reported it. Shawn tried arguing that the NCAA was miscalculating his GPA, but that excuse was never going to fly. He knew what he was doing and should have known better than to try to get away with it. There were simply too many eyes on him by then.

Trouble in paradise https://www.pressherald.com/2026/06...ty-of-maine-at-augusta-umaine-system-opinion/

People who think increases in ticket prices are to help buy better players are completely delusional.
What does your post even mean?

I read the PPH article.....it's UMaine-Augusta......what does that have to do with Orono or the hockey program?

I assume your ticket price comment is a separate thought? I'd agree that in general the increase in ticket prices will help subsidize Alfond Arena operations and dept. salaries more than anything. But it does allow more financial freedom so-to-speak. Less taxpayer burden and hopefully more focused private donations.....to pay players.

I'm going to need you to show your work on how you connected this op-ed to anything at UMaine, much less the athletics department or ticket prices....

Here is some background on it: https://www.centralmaine.com/2026/0...ited-architecture-program-with-building-move/

Really sad that they’ve put so much work into the program and it sounds like it is going away.

What this has to do with the hockey program is the system is skint and that is going to impact everyone. I’m sure the last thing anyone wants to do is hurt the architecture program, but they don’t really have any easy choices. The audited fs are easily available and are not pretty.
