UNH Hockey Off Season Thread 2026

Brown’s goalie Tyler Shea has entered the transfer portal with one more year of eligibility. His stats last year: 3.26 GAA, 0.911 sv%, 3-20-2 in 26 games and 1474 minutes. Maybe MS7 can use his Brown connections to reel this guy in?
We already have enough Brown connections in the UNH program already, don't you think, Snives? Whittet has been there for 17 seasons as head coach, and only two (2) barely winning seasons, with most seasons being less than 10 overall wins. This kid won three (3) games last season. Why, Snives, why???

He will always have that goal up in Orono. I believe it was a GWG as well? I wish him all the best.

Divver later tweeted PSUs J.J Wiebusch is also planning on hitting the portal. 16-20-36 as a sophomore, after a 14-19-33 as a freshmen. He would be a really solid get for UNH if they can convince him. Seems to be a solid scorer while also creating opportunities for teammates.
Hit me with the sales pitch, Flaggy ... see if you get halfway through without bursting out laughing. No way the current crew could attract this kid to Titletown.

Wiebusch is from Wisconsin and with their success this year i'm sure their one of the front runners. Silverstein if promised to be the number one goalie might be a little more logical but don't hold your breath.

Player's departure is no surprise, best of luck to him. Echoing RB, at least one more, maybe two, will likely follow...

With UNH looking for two goalies, one of which I imagine will transfer in, they'd be foolish not to kick the tires on both Silverstein and Shea. And removing Quinnipiac vs. Brown from the conversation, I'm not sure I wouldn't actually prefer Tyler Shea...

Shea started his career at Michigan but did not make an appearance as a FR. He only started 16 games in his first two seasons at Brown but posted SPCTs of .901 (10 Games) and .936 (6 games), while backing up Lawton Zacher (.909/.917, respectively). Zacher, of course, transferred to Northeastern ahead of this season and was Second-Team All-Hockey East...

This season, Shea posted a .911 SPCT in 26 games behind a Brown Bears club that finished 57th in goal against and 61st in shots on goal against. While Shea actually bested Zacher in 2024-25 SPCT by 0.019 percentage points, he easily outpaced his back-up in 2025-26 (former Denver netminder Freddie Halyak) by 0.030. I think he'll be a pretty nice get for someone, and he fits UNH's timeline perfectly with a chance to split/mentor RLH, before the latter takes over the crease for (hopefully) three strong seasons.

Silverstein, meanwhile, despite far more fan fare, shares a stature and story with Shea (both are only 6-0, 180ish LBS). Silverstein started his career sitting as a FR at Boston College, then transferred to Quinnipiac and posted respective SPCTs of .903 (24 games) and .912 (18 games), but he did so in 2025-26 for a Bobcat team that ranked 1st in fewest shots allowed per game. He posted a worse SPCT than his tandem partner in 2024-25 as Qs 1-A, but was the better of the two this season as Qs 1-B. Silvestein also has TWO seasons of eligibility left, which complicates the timeline...

So Shea would come with equivalent to better SPCT numbers despite facing many more shots on goal (and likely more difficult SOG), lagging behind in games played solely because he backed up the 2025-26 HE 2nd-Teamer for two seasons at Brown...

This is all pending an eye-test scouting report, of course. Hopefully, UNH calls both on Transfer Portal Day One...

Hahaha! The sales pitch starts and ends with “pretty pretty… PLEASE?!”

In all reality, I think UNH should focus on local guys who hit the portal. Guys from New England (especially NH) who may go to schools far away and want maybe 1 or 2 years closer to home, making it easier for family to go to games etc. I don’t know how many of those guys will pop up in the portal, and obviously there will be steep competition with other HEA schools, but I think it worked fairly well with KC this past year.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, for guys entering the portal, how much of a “sense” do they feel they will get picked up?

I bring this up specific to Player. I think he plays a good game, but he’s been with us for 2 seasons and has 2 points in 38 games, playing for an “abysmal” UNH team that has finished 10th in HE both years. His last year in the USHL wasnt a burner either, with 11 points in 59 games for Green Bay.

I’m just wondering what offers he may get in the portal? Maybe an AHA team? Or perhaps DIII?

I don’t want this to appear I’m bashing him - perhaps I’m just scouting the stat line a bit. We certainly know the history of guys who leave UNH and tear it up elsewhere… For all I know he will have a lot of interest across DI.

Anyways, back to my initial question — I know there are strict rules to prevent communication with players before the portal opens. I’m just wondering if there’s more going on behind the scenes here.

Why, indeed! Because MS7 gave up on our last Tyler and look what happened. Here is a chance for MS7 to make up up for that mistake by going with another goalie named Tyler. But, more seriously, I think that >0.900 sv%’s the past the past three seasons on an atrocious team is commendable. And what Dan wrote! 🙂

You'll note Dan's caveat for the "eye test" on the Brown kid. Please put me down for that, too. Good (not great) goalies on crappy teams can pile up a lot of meaningless saves against opponents who might be resting their top six forwards later in the game for the next evening's game, which Brown's case would usually be against ECAC travel partner Yale. Gotta think most ECAC opponents would see Yale as the tougher of the two, and Brown as more of the doormat. Who knows, right??

There has been a lot of chatter at the NHL level about the stats keepers tightening up the accuracy of SOG stats, probably at least as much for the growing amount of prop betting as for goalie-friendly local SOG counters. But I'm not a big SOG guy (as you know) Snives, so if Big Mike snags him, we'll find out for ourselves, won't we?

The BIG10 is absolutely cleaning house this year in college sports. So far this academic year they have won the national championships in:

Mens soccer (Washington)
Womens field hockey (Northwestern)
Mens wrestling (Penn State)
Football (Indiana)
Mens basketball (Michigan)
Womens basketball (UCLA)
Womens hockey (Wisconsin)

They also have a 50:50 shot at mens hockey with both Michigan and Wisconsin in the FF.

What a run they’ve been on this past year!

I'd imagine the coaching staff is having a tough conversation with Reid Conn if they haven't already. Looked like he struggled to keep up with the speed of the game in the chances he got this season.

Well you hate to see it but it's the way of things...hope they are building the best roster possible...interesting times ahead! Welp off to WARM WEATHER in Sin City...Jellsville see you eventually at some point...staying at NY NY. Don't really have a dog in this hunt...I tend to go with the 'underdogs' and I guess in this situation it's Wisco? I should be in Denvers corner as my DIL went to Denver...like their coach he's done alot in his tenure there.

Regardless? HR is going to live vicariously with the victor!!! ha!

Well, the Big10 did not win alpine skiing, which went to Utah, for the sixth time in the past seven years.

God knows reading most of what Potluck posts makes me cringe, but this comment posted to a an article in The Athletic made me think of him ... It's basically a more polite way of saying what he's been preaching re: institutional commitment being the key to sustained athletic success:

"There is one linkage that University administrators care about, i.e., successful athletic programs, especially when they were previously lacking, can give academics a tremendous boost. This applies to public institutions where it can drastically change the attitude of legislatures and governors, and to privates, where it can stimulate large increases to alumni and other donations. UConn is a perfect example. Its academic resources, undergraduate recruiting & selectivity, research stature, and campus environment were all tremendously enhanced starting with Geno's arrival. It hasn't worked as well everywhere and is often taken to excess, but it's not just an automatic money pit; it's more of an investment with high risk and high reward that has to be managed well. At UConn, it was a President you never heard of, Harry Hartley, who pulled it off" ...

It seems pretty clear to me that unless/until the NH Legislature and UNH Administration starts expecting more than just mediocrity from Wildcat athletics, and is willing to support/fund it with that mindset, that's what we're fated to get. Perhaps the announced top-to-bottom review of the Athletic Dept. will lead to meaningful change and accountability, but given the perilous financial situation of the State/University System I'm not especially optimistic ...

Perhaps a more attainable “get” for UNH - I read online RMU’s Cameron Garvey is entering the portal. A back-to-back captain (impressive as a Sophomore) he finished 11-14-25 for RMU last year, after a 7-15-22 as a sophomore. As a 2 time captain I imagine he would bring strong leadership, and the assist totals are encouraging.

Still with RMU in AHA I take pause with the numbers translating over to HEA…

Yeah, you never really know with those AHA transfers. I've seen quite a few come over and have massive drops in productivity, however, Trevor Hoskin was an exception this year for Merrimack. He lead the Niagara Purple Eagles in scoring with 39 points in 36 games as a 20-year-old freshman and won AHA Rookie of the Year, then this year with MC as a sophomore, had 35 points in 34 games, tied for second on the team.

Hoskin also enjoyed the benefits of a coach this past season who knows how to teach the game and develop his players. Big difference.

I think the sales pitch is irrelevant if the checkbook isn't thick enough.
If I'm a player with realistic hopes of a future pro career, there is no check big enough to convince me to play for a program that won't help develop me, that's short-term thinking. I want to play for a program where they'll develop my game, to the point it allows me to earn much, much bigger rewards in the pro ranks.

That's why MS7's challenge is not limited to getting more money from Concord. As others have pointed out ... none of that is gonna make him a better coach, and to the extent MS7's excuse/wish list has been granted in the past, it now appears those past funds have been spunked for very little value in return.
