Bernie and Chris Murphy are so upset over the deal that they **checks notes** allowed for a unanimous consent agreement to go through so this gets done quicker. Why gum up the works at all and make a spectacle of this...they had to work over the weekend what more can we ask?

(And dont come at me with some pragmatic bs...if you think tbe deal is bad make it a slog...that is what the rules of the Senate are for)

Then again they both voted for Rubio so why not.

Time to storm the Bastille...

Pretty funny it wasnt until today Angus King told us ICE got paid while no one else did. Seems like that would have been something to talk about every day...

Of course that is only true because of the stupid bill that passed...which happened in part because in March instead of fighting and shutting down to try and prevent the abortion of a bill Schumer and the Dems caved, funded the government and allowed the bill to pass. I remember a lot of people saying "well this will just be kicking the can down the road...come the Fall the government will shut down and the Dems will have all the leverage!" Why does that sound so familiar...

I wasn’t one of those people. I was right there with you screaming up and down about how stupid it was politically.
So…those able to vote in November watched the Democrats cave back in March, and they responded with November 4, 2025. I was by far the biggest Debbie Downer poster on here about the results meaning anything more broadly, based on the November 5, 2024 results.
That said…the results are what they are, an actual data point, versus “public opinion” and whatever other noise out there. I accept that for this argument…I understand that yours might be that the November 4 was a vote of confidence for the shutdown continuing. Since this was our last real data point until November 2026, which seems like 6 years away in fascism time…don’t jump off the train just yet, Handy. We don’t know for sure.

I say all of that with the absolute certainty that the American public has almost certainly fucked us already. And to that I say, why not stay on the Titanic until the end? Wasn’t it about the friends you made along the way?

The government isn't actually going to reopen for a few more days. Once this passes the Senate it has to work its way through the House. That will take some time, starting with Johnson calling the House back into session after a seven week paid vacation. There is a nonzero chance a few loons will sabotage the legislation (c'mon Margarine!) before it can get passed. However, eagle eyed parliamentarians have observed there is a provision in the bill to ensure members of Congress will continue to get paid even when the government shuts down again in January, so one less reason to oppose. There is also the fact Johnson is terrified of swearing in Grijalva which would force his hand on the Epstein files. I think he will maneuver around that, but it will take time. I would be surprised if the government reopens before Thursday.

What makes you think SNAP will be funded? You keep pretending this was negotiated in good faith the deal isn't worth the paper if it's written on and if you are right and another shutdown happens Trump will cut it off again if he wants to. There were Senate GOPers saying as much when the shutdown started the Dems have zero reason to trust any deal.

The Dems will have zero leverage in January. You cant whine about Health Care Costs when twice in under a year you refused to anything meaningful about it and that is what the Dems have done. And spoiler alert...they wint in January either because they dont have the balls to do what must be done under pressure. When 60% of the voters are behind you and you cave you arent playing the game you arent part of the orgy you are just in the corner jerking off...

This is not an academic argument...in the real world the Dems are going to be hurt electorally by doing this. I will say it again there is a reason that prior to the Shutdown the Dems polled worse than the GOP and it is because of stuff like this. They have no heart, and no fight. Whats worse is they actively spit in the face of the people who do fight. Its all perfirmative...like Nancy Pelosi wearing a dashiki and taking a knee. (She would have never made this deal though)

Next time there is a No Kings rally the people should protest the Dems too.
A year they refused to do anything about it? What are you talking about? They are the minority party. There is only so much you can do in that position.

No dems voted to kill the subsidies when they were up for a vote. JD Vance had to break the tie.

What is your plan for the folks who are working for the federal government for the next 13 months? What about the snap recipients? Fuck all of them too?

I figured Friday...The Eostein Guild will have 36 hours of "look at us we are sane" then cave. Massie will be the ladt hold out just to give the finger to Donny but he will give in like always.

I think your version of how Johnson gets around seearing her in is likely how it plays out...

I dont have the energy to watch people fumble at the goal line on purpose. As long as Schumer and his cadre control the Senate Dems it is better to assume they will screw it all up and then maybe be pleasantly surprised.

The Senate Dems are maybe the dumbest politicians I have ever seen.

I know you are smarter than this dude. But I will play along.

1) being the minority party sucks but it doesn't take away your power. That is why The Senate exists. The filibuster is there to prevent the majority from running roughshod. (Thanks slavery!) When the last CR was passed DOGE was running wild and the BBB was pretty well known. All the problems that exist now...were known then. Phuck we all discussed them here on a god damned hockey site. The GOP didnt have the votes to break the filibuster which makes Schumer arguably the most powerful man in Congress. (Look at what Mitch did as minority leader...or Harry Reid) To pass the CR in March they needed Dems to cross. This is where you get concessions to make it happen. The Dems asked for and got nothing. No votes on anything, no rebuke of Trump and his illegal pocket veto, no reigning in ICE, no slowing down DOGE and no help on health care which was headed for a cliff. The head of one of the Federal Workers Unions literally said "shut it down we cant work like this" and the Dems did zero and got zero. They kicked the can to now because they knew the economy would likely tank and health care would be the big issue. Fine. Then we get here, they are cruising to one of the biggest turnarounds since Nixon comes back totally winning the shutdown and talking about health care as the primary (or at worst secondary) thing yo fix...and they cut a deal that does literally nothing to help health care. And no one can figure out why. The GOP is dancing a jig they were handed such a gift (the Twitter Board of Directors wasnt this happy when Elmo offered them twice their actual value to buy them out and they said yes in like five minutes) and now, once again, the hope is another shutdown...this time to start the year? Oh with the added on hope that Trump honors the paying of federal workers and funding SNAP which both know isn't going to happen. Two times the Dems had the GOP over a barrel, backed into a corner and chose to walk away and give them help.

Its not about who voted to end the subsidies...it is about the Dems doing nothing but say harsh words to try and stop it. Funny that competent minority leaders going back 200 years found ways to prevent what they didnt like when they put a little effort in...but the Senate Dems are performative not actionable. That is why they make sure to have their little 30 second videos ready saying how bad stuff is...while they allow unanimous consent to push the issues forward. They are not a competently opposition party.

As for the workers...yes it absolutely sucks for them no doubt. Guess what, it isn't all that much better now. Even if we assume the deal goes through (likely) and is honored (name your price on that bet) they still won't be able to afford anything or have health insurance. That is why you see a lot of them not supporting this at all. SNAP recipients werent saying The Dems should cave...they were saying to keep fighting because capitalism is failing them. And again the Courts overruled Trump anyways and said he had to fund it...which means dick to me but according to you still has value. So they were no more screwed yesterday than they are today or will be when this finally loaded.

Look maybe you are right and in January the Dems will hold out and win the day and if so I will be here to say it. But to me this is just a Neville Chamberlain and the Rhineland. The Dems still think the GOP can be persuaded to do the right thing because they refuse to believe their "friends" are evil phucktards. (Btw this is me painting them in the best light...a lot of people people they are honestly just as evil) Chamberlain believed Hitler could be pacified by concessions...but he always wanted more. The GOP is that way...and you cant trust them for nothing. Cause Priceless is right...next Shutdown they are going to shoot the friggin moon because they know it won't take much of anything to get the Dems to cave.

So what’s your grand plan?
They. Were. Winning. The "grand plan" was working. It would be like Mike Tyson's corner throwing in the towel when he had knocked Leon Spinks on his ass.

So is that a yes on both properties, or did you have a preference?

You are giving them way too much credit. It's not stupidity. They are complicit. They don't give a shit about us any more than the Nazis do.

I know...but making that argument shuts people down. I am speaking in the best terms to show how even in the best light they phucking choked.

I admit I only taught negotiation for a couple years but I never ran across the "the other side is not giving in at all so lets just quit and go home" strategy. Must be new.
