Ohio State Women's Hockey 2025-26

#27, aka Jordan Baxter, had given Emma Kreitz a couple cross-checks immediately prior. They both very much in line for possible suspension. As is Jordyn Petrie, who landed the only true punch that I saw on what the TV cameras captured.
Yea Baxter got some shots in too. All pretty close. As the lineys pull 8 out, 8 is still throwing hands. Abbey Murphy wasn’t involved originally but comes flying in near the end and runs into a ref. 19 OSU also throwing punches. Frost lucky he didn’t get his feet stepped on.

What I think is sad is there is this really uncomfortable reality that these sports we love can lead to long term brain damage. Even the very jostling of the brain over a career of routine plays is Not Great. For players to do stuff like this doesn’t respect the game or fellow players and is just stupid on so many levels. The games are risky enough, no need for this dumb stuff.

Maybe those game suspensions should be applied the next time these teams meet.
That system would be imperfect as well. These teams are next scheduled to play during the Olympics (would #8 for UM's suspension count if she's not in the same hemisphere?) Other times, teams would meet in the postseason, or in the case of seniors, maybe never.

IMO, it is something best handled by coaches; set the expectation early and hold players to that.

Ohio State had a short bench tonight, but the girls who played gave great effort, taking down St. Cloud by a final score of 5-1. Brooke Disher opened the scoring for Ohio State to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. St. Cloud's Maria Mikaelyan would score early in the second period to tie things up. Hilda Svensson scored on a penalty shot later in the period to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead at the final intermission. The Buckeyes scored three goals in the final frame to win it 5-1. The Ohio State goals were scored by Joy Dunne, Sloane Matthews, and Sanni Vanhanen. Ohio State outshot the Huskies in this one 40-12. Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod stopped 11 of the 12 shots she faced to get the win, JoJo Chobak got the start in net for St. Cloud and stopped 35 of the 40 shots she faced. The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST. Special shoutout to all the Women's Hockey Alums who came back for Alumni Weekend. It is always great to see them!!

Final Score From Friday, October 24th
Ohio State 5
St. Cloud State 1

Double Win For Canadian Buckeyes

A fine Buckeye Win at the Ice Rink. And for those wearing Toronto Blue Jays Jerseys to last night's festivities, a memorable night indeed. That would include a certain member of the the coaching staff. Clearly the Blue Jays have friends in high places here at Ohio State.

Now a Game 1 win does not a World Series Champion make. But an 11-4 dismantling of the talented, well-funded Dodgers? A very nice win to have. To say nothing of a great start in the 2025 World Series.

Personally, of course, my primary concern Friday evening was the hockey game...

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: The Ohio State Penalty Kill
The killers were a perfect 4 for 4 last night. Another puck battle won by Dunne;, Another puck sent down the ice by Peschel. And so on and so on. The OSU PK was simply dominant.

#3 Star: Maria Mikaelyan, St. Cloud State
Maria scored the lone Huskies Goal. Overall, she put up 6 shots on target, literally half of the St. Cloud SOG Team Total. Mikaelyan proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Call the fact that Maria had the breakthrough goal a just result.

The end-to-end play began with Marie Moran's breakout pass from the St. Cloud 'D' Zone. Payton Holloway and Avery Farrell each won neutral zone battles to keep the puck moving forward. So a lot had to happen for this goal to occur. A tip of the hat to all 4 Huskies who participated in the scoring play.

#2 Star: Sanni Vanhanen, Ohio State
Sanni completed the scoring with a fine dash to the St. Cloud Net, complete with the finishing touch. Similar to the St. Cloud tally, the play began with a breakout pass by Sara Swiderski. Sara earned the Secondary Assist. Maria Roth helped the puck along, providing the Primary Assist -- thus notching her first scoring point as a Buckeye. In recognition of that first point, Roth got a congratulatory pat from Assistant Coach Wisniewski. Nice moment.

#1 Star: Brooke Disher, Ohio State
"Certain Circumstances" in Minneapolis last Sunday led to the need to cobble together a 3rd Forward Line. It took less than 8 minutes for the new unit to produce, with Brooke pounding home the first goal. That tally got the Buckeyes off and running, setting the tone for the game. Linemate du jour Grace McCoshen got her first scoring point of the season with the Primary Assist. On the Secondary Assist, Freshman Defender Leah Wicks grabbed her second assist as a Buckeye.

This was a night when Ohio State needed to have some of the "depth players" step up. They did.

Last but not least, Disher hails from British Columbia. Now the Blue Jays may not be quite as big in BC as they are in Ontario. But I imagine that Brooke was one of the Proud Canadians last night.

The Buckeyes completed the sweep earlier today with a come-from-behind 4-2 win, scoring all four goals in the final frame to send the home crowd and the Alums home happy! Maelie Pion opened the scoring for the Huskies to send the visitors into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period, so the teams went into the final intermission with St. Cloud still leading 1-0. Julianne Labbe scored for the Huskies early in the third period to add to the lead at 2-0. Joy Dunne got Ohio State on the board to make it 2-1. St. Cloud was called for contact to the head and the Buckeyes went on a five-minute power play. Ohio State got goals from Joy Dunne and Emma Peschel to take the lead at 3-2. Joy Dunne added a late goal to get a hat trick and help the Bucks secure a 4-2 win. Ohio State outshot the Huskies 44-15 in this one. Taylor Kressin got the start in net for the Buckeyes and stopped 13 of the 15 shots she faced to get the win. St. Cloud netminder JoJo Chobak stopped 40 of the 44 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State will travel to St. Thomas next weekend. St. Cloud will return home for a series against Minnesota-Duluth.

Final Score From Saturday, October 25th
Ohio State 4
St. Cloud State 2

Dunne Detonation; Dunne Deal

Joy Dunne exploded for three third period goals, thus snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Did St. Cloud State deserve a better fate? Quite possibly so.

The Huskies came out with an improved compete level. They cashed in their best scoring chances. Led by Goalie Jojo Chobak, the St. Cloud 'D' kept Ohio State mostly at bay for the first 48 minutes of the game.

In contrast, the Buckeyes came out a little sluggish. Passes weren't crisp. Shots seemed insincere. St. Cloud looked like the hungrier team. It took over 2 periods of play, but the Bucks finally got the lead out.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: (tie) Maelie Pion and Julianne Labbe

Holding down the left point, Maelie gloved down an OSU clearing attempt, then burst into the slot. The quick, skillful move surprised the Buckeye 'D.' Pion's uncontested shot found the mark.

Sidney Jackel & Grace Wolfe combined to spring Julianne on a mini-breakaway. Grade A chance. Once again the Huskies' shooter was equal to the task.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Taylor Kressin
Freshman Kressin had her inaugural voyage as a Buckeye. Taylor performed well; recording 13 Saves on 15 St. Cloud Shots. OK, two Grade A chances got past her. But as for the rest of the shots? Perfection. In the end, 'twas good enough to earn the win.

#3 Star: Hilda Svensson, Ohio State
Since arriving on campus, Hilda's been earning regular mentions on my Stars Lists. She's absolutely earned every one of them.

On Saturday, Svensson had Assists on all 4 Buckeye Goals. That led all players. Likewise, her 4 scoring points led all players. Hilda's 6 Shots On Goal? Led all players. You get the idea.

#2 Star: Emma Peschel, Ohio State
Led by Peschel, the Buckeye PK was once again perfect. Saturday they shut down all 3 Huskies PP opportunities. That completed a perfect 7 for 7 weekend.

Emma was equally dazzling on the offensive end of the rink. Her GWG came on searing laser beam that found the upper right hand corner of the net. The brilliant Peschel is a delight to behold anywhere on the whole 200 Feet.

#1 Star: Joy Dunne, Ohio State
Joy to the World. All the Boys & Girls. Joy to the Fishes in the Deep Blue Sea. Joy to You & Me. You Know We Love That Lady. To watch her perform is to Have Our Fun. OK, maybe I'm getting a little carried away. But after all, it was a Three Goal Night.

When the Buckeyes fell behind 2-0, things looked bleak. Enter Dunne, along with major contributions from the entire 1st PP unit. Breaking the ice, Joy jammed in a rebound to get OSU on the board. Five minutes later, a PP conversion tied the score. During the last minute of the contest, Joy banked the puck in off a St. Cloud defender, completing the Hat Trick. Dunne Deal. Joy to the World indeed. Or at least Joy to Buckeye Nation.

I remarked to a fellow fan that Dunne is the second coming of Natalie Spooner. Both players are Power Forwards par excellence. My friend's response? Yeah, true. But when it comes to carrying the puck, Joy is BETTER. Could be! And just maybe we'll see these two Buckeye Super Stars battle it out in a USA/Canada match-up sometime soon. Here's to hoping.

Next Stargazing: A Bit Of A Wait. We'll See You On November 14th & 15th For Minnesota State.

St.Clouds defense was much more stout Saturday and we seemed a touch out of sync despite a significant SOG advantage. The 5 minute major PP was the gift we needed to get back in the game and do what needed done for the win.

You're correct to emphasize the Major Penalty. The first Dunne Goal -- at even strength -- was the turning point of the game. But moments later, we converted twice on the major. That was the vehicle we used to get over the hump.
