CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

Bemidji State opted out of the settlement this year and will re-examine next year. With being a D-II school in all sports but hockey, they wanted to see where everything falls. I know they had some concerns with the roster limits, last year the Women's team would have been down to one goalie due to injuries. They would have had to cut a player or two mid season and brought goalies in to have spares on the roster.

Players still can be paid outside of the settlement as long as it passes the Clearinghouse. Not sure where the money would come from outside of some free meals from businesses and such, with BSU being a small school. I know last year some of the football linemen got some meals through NIL deals with a restaurant.
i distinctly remember eric pohlkamp had an advertising deal with a bank while at bemidji, like he was in an ad where he was pretending to work at a bank in his full on BSU gear including skates and gloves. doubt he got a super substantial amount though

You may be correct, I honestly hadn't heard that. I did hear through the grapevine he got a deal around $70,000 to transfer to Denver, though....

the CHL doing the dumbest thing possible here. no longer issuing scout passes for NCAA coaches. really just cements a divide here, when i think teams could benefit from collaboration way more if they get over themselves.
They fought back but I doubt this means much. Scouts just go, buy the ticket, see the recruit. Talk to player, family, and agents away from the arena. Every game can be watched. If anything players, family, and agents will likely consider this petty and be more apt to feel as though the league office and coaches don’t have their best interest in mind.

follow up on this from Marek:
Another follow up from the CHL - it will be up to the individual CHL teams to determine what access looks like for NCAA personnel. What this means essentially is some teams will have relationships with NCAA scouts/coaches where passes and/or free tickets will be issued and others will not. This will all be on a team-by-team basis.
easy way to check which teams are smart and which arent i guess?

09 F Nolan Snyder commits to Penn State, playing for Kingston Frontenacs this season, Pittsburgh native.

Other signing from previously rumored college jump- Justin Carbonneau is likely to sign his ELC with the Blues.

08 D Levi Harper commits to Minnesota, SSM standout and Hlinka Gretzky gold medalist who is playing for the Saginaw Spirit. Looked amazing in preseason, 1g7a in 5 games, second in assists.

FloHockey announces the free games for the opening week of the OHL and QMJHL:

WHL remains fully free on victory plus and starts on friday 9/19

a few more guys getting through the Eligibility Center after Bemidji State:

ASU brings in forward Jack Beck, 4 years in the OHL, last season had 4 games in AHL and 36 in ECHL, former 6th round pick to Calgary in 2021, younger brother of former Sun Devil Noah Beck who just finished his grad year there after 4 years at Clarkson (current San Jose Shark!)

Quinnipiac brings in defenseman Graham Sward, 6 seasons in the WHL, former 5th round pick by Nashville in 2022, 47 ECHL and 2 AHL games

Two of Omaha's bajillion USports transfers have brief pro experience from tryouts: Aidan De La Gorgendiere (10 ECHL), Marc Lajoie (1 AHL)

My thoughts on this whole thing if you are curious: I don't mind this for a lot of the reasons in this article and stated in the latest episode of Called Up. Timestamp is 58:51 if the link doesn't take you there.

Reality is, the 21 year old age thing is going to prevent a lot of the fear mongering that is going around, and the ECHL salary is essentially only living expenses. If they had a whole year in the AHL I doubt it'll pass the test, but playing 10 or under games is whatever. The more pressing reality for the NCAA is if they try to backpedal this, they will get sued (again) and lose (again).

A lot of these guys find themselves barely afloat in the ECHL and ultimately end up stranded after their playing career. If they can boost their career longevity and/or get a substantial education, it improves their life prospects so much.

There are a few games in the OHL and QMJHL yet to finish today, but most of the first weekend of CHL play has finished. It is always a little squirrelly, some younger players get bigger roles than expected due to the guys still at NHL camps and players still learning the systems. You can get some really wacky games, like the 9-7 Moose Jaw win last night or the shootout win for Everett over Wenatchee where Wild import goalie Tobias Tvrznik made 60 saves in his very first game, only losing in 6 rounds of the shootout. Kitchener Rangers are playing with only 9 forwards (with a few affiliates too) and are missing their starting goalie and still somehow found a way to win 2 games.

Some commits with standout performances-

QMJHL:
Justin Larose (Michigan) recently named captain for Newfoundland Regiment, who won their first two games over reigning champions Moncton, has 6 points in 2 games, 2g 4a
Vincent Desjardins (Omaha) 1g4a in 2 games with BLB
Liam Lefebvre (UVM) 2g2a in 2 games for Rimouski

OHL:
Thomas Vandenberg (Providence) hat trick in his OHL debut for Ottawa 67s in their 6-2 win over Kingston
Egor Barabanov (Penn State) with 5 points in 2 games, 2g3a for the Saginaw Spirit who continue to attempt to outscore their problems with mixed results. Levi Harper (Minnesota) and Nikita Klepov (Michigan State) are also contributing, lead by as-yet uncommitted Dima Zhilkin
Joe Salandra (Harvard) with 1g2a in his debut for Barrie

WHL:
Brock Souch (St Cloud State) 2g3a in 2 games with Prince George
JP Hurlbert (Michigan) with a hat trick in his Kamloops debut
AJ Reyelts (UMD) .955% on his first appearance with Penticton Vees for their first WHL win. Brady Birnie (Bemidji State) with the first Penticton goal in WHL history
Alexander Levshyn (Clarkson) with .942% in 2 games with Prince George

Plenty of first goals in new leagues. if you want to know about anyone in particular let me know.

Note from Jon Keen (Kamloops pxp) seems there are WHL players from Minnesota doing the "Before & After" agreements like in the USHL, where they spend a few games with the team before going for a state title and return afterwards.
