Maine Recruits: When Ashes Fall, Legends Rise

I noticed a couple Maine recruits(‘08s) are playing in the USA hockey 17 national festival in Amherst, NY. Rhys Medved is playing for the Mid-American squad. Jude Herron is playing for the New England squad.

Not sure if Maine is recruiting ‘08 RW Garrit Turcotte, but he is playing for New England and is from South Bewick, ME.

This is a tryout for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup camp invites. https://teamusa.usahockey.com/2025boys17camp

Another ‘08 to track hoping Maine is recruiting is Evan Ferraro, son of former Blackbear great Chris Ferraro. As most know, the Ferraro twins were freshmen along with Paul Kariya which made Maine into a juggernaut going 42-1-2 and winning their first national championship.

Evan is described as gifted offensive forward, silky hands, hard quick release, skates very well, good vision and playmaking.

Maine gets their first(?) '09 commit.

Appears to be a big pickup, led team Red in the USA Select 16's in points (7 in 5 games) and was tied 5th among all players at the USA select 16's in June.

Also drafted in Round 4, (#51) by the Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) and Round 5, (#76) by the Newfoundland Regiment (QMJHL).

Sounds good to me…

Joseph Covelluzzi(Cushing(Prep)), 1/30/09, 1st RW, 5’ 8” 180 lbs, NZ 4.0, excellent acceleration, speedy, creative, high-compete motor, wins loose pucks, creates offense off the rush, quick give-and-go touches, great lateral agility, shifty, evasive, generates as shooter and playmaker, process info quickly, plays at high speed, finishes checks, wins board battles

Maine getting preseason recruiting representation… https://www.instagram.com/p/DNA3kS_xqvJ/?img_index=1

Maybe discounted due to injury last year, but there is a good chance Langlois is top freshman D and Marques is top freshman F. From watching film on Gerrior, Lipinski, and Peluso it doesn’t seem like they are out of the realm of being high impact freshman either. Rousseau likely will be used sparingly since Boija has the goalie position locked down. This class has a chance to be up there as one of the best of all time, if I had to guess. We shall see, hopefully they are already working hard.

Neutral Zone just updated the classes, and now Maine’s class is correct. When sorting by average recruit ranking Maine is now 5th with an average rating of 4.05. Just ahead of BC(4.04) and just behind Michigan(4.06).

Here are there updated ratings per recruit:
************************************
1) Justin Poirier(4.5)
2) Marques(4.25)
3) Lukas Peterson(4.25)
4) Jeremy Langlois(4.0)
5) Loic Usereau(4.0)
6) Will Gerrior(4.0)
7) Jaden Lipinkski(4.0)
8) Luke Coughlin(4.0)
9) Mathis Rousseau(4.0)
10) Nicolas Peluso(3.75)
11) Brock James(3.75)

Max Scott and Simon Motew are not included since they are considered transfers.

Whereas previous years it was rare to have a recruit above 4, now only a couple are below 4. In Peluso’s case he had some serious momentum in the playoffs last season, yet his rating didn’t budge. So he may be underrated, not sure?

I think this shows how big of deal allowing major jr players to play college hockey was for Maine. Obviously in previous years the vast majority of those guys wouldn’t have been an option.

Other teams have taken advantage as well......Penn State being a big one. To me it seems like BC might be the big loser in all of this. They dominate the U.S. underage recruiting scene.....suddenly many of their HE rivals have upgraded talent.

True, and it is also after two seasons of ncaa playoff level(Maine’s ascension under Barr). Should see the program staying strong or getting stronger. So having a well run program is also going to draw more consideration from recruits. Having nicer facilities should draw more consideration. Having sellouts and rabid fan base again helps draw more consideration. All of these things are lifting the program. It is impressive how much growth the program has had as compared to previous era under Gendron.
