Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

Final Score From Saturday, March 15th
Ohio State 6
St. Lawrence 1

Prophecy Fulfilled
Asked a Friend how she thought the Regional Title Game would go. She has fine hockey mind; she's always worth listening to. Her response: St. Lawrence will be very competitive for a while. But eventually the Buckeyes will overpower the Saints and win going away. It's inevitable. The Core of the Message: Relax. We've got this. I chose to remain nervous.

Ultimately the prophecy was fulfilled. But the Saints did give some meaning to my nerves. St. Lawrence opened the scoring with a PP tally. Even after the Buckeyes successfully responded, Ohio State had only a one goal lead after two periods. What was the second period like? OSU: 22 Shots. SLU: 1 Shot. Scoring? No Scoring. The feeling? Well, we certainly do seem to be overpowering. But maybe this just isn't meant to be.

Clearly the Saints had a plan. Strong forechecker. Have a Saint Sniper lurking nearby. Create an offensive zone turnover. Crisp pass to the Sniper; Grade A scoring chance. Naturally Plan A was to have Abby Hustler do the sniping. The Saints almost pulled it off a couple of times. Happily for the home fans, the Buckeyes nipped those attempts in the bud. Had St. Lawrence been able to tie the game at 2-2, who knows?

The next problem was finally breaking through the stingy Saints defense. You know the old truism: In the biggest games, your best players have to produce. All three of the Buckeye Forwards atop the Line Chart convincingly proved that they're big game players. The trio monopolizes this edition of The Three Stars.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

St. Lawrence Honorable Mention: Aly McLeod
Saint Aly opened the scoring. Nice puck movement by the St. Lawrence PP. Didn't catch the number of the Saint who set the screen, but good on her. McLeod then focused in on some open space in the top shelf of the Buckeye goal cage, Nailed it. Congrats on a well-chosen, well-executed shot.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Riley Brengman
Riley posted a WTF +/- Stat on Saturday. Brengman was a +6. What a game! Didn't check, but I've got to believe that's the highest total posted by a Buckeye player this year.

#3 Star: Makenna Webster, Ohio State
What's Makenna's recipe? One Part Fire Plug; Two Parts Pit Bull; and Four Parts Super Nova. Translation? Not the biggest player on the ice, but one of the sturdiest; a competitor filled with sheer determination; and one of the very brightest stars in the sky.

Webster gave us a fine performance on Saturday, assisting on the first Buckeye Goal and scoring the fourth Buckeye Goal. Overall, Makenna was +3 for the game.

#2 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Amos matched her Right Winger's production, scoring the third Buckeye Goal and assisting on the fifth Buckeye Goal. Overall, Jocelyn was also +3 for the game.

There's more, of course. As the first line center, Amos won 64% of her draws. That's always going to make a big difference in a game.

Perhaps Jocelyn's biggest contribution of all is the sparkling synergy she creates with her line mates.

#1 Star: Joy Dunne, Ohio State
Want a Power Forward on your team? A player that can truly overpower the opposition? A prophecy fulfiller? There's no better choice than Joy Dunne.

How 'bout that Saturday production? Dunne scored the second Buckeye Goal; assisted on third & fourth Buckeye Goals; and scored the fifth Buckeye Goal. Totals: Two goals and Two assists for a 4 point night. In terms of +/- , Joy was +4 for the game. By all rights, that should have led all players. But see Riley Brengman's Honorable Mention.

I suppose I could brag that Dunne won 100% of her face-offs. While true, that would be getting a little carried away, even for me. Joy was 1 for 1 in the face-off circle. We can leave the centering to Amos.

Congrats to Saturday's 1st Line. Big Time Players, One & All.

Confidential To PA Announcer Rick & The Buckeye Faithful:
I thoroughly enjoyed the responsive reading of Buckeye Goal. All six times!

Confidential To The Readers:

Sorry about the "slow publication." Last Saturday was a massive day for Ohio State Hockey, both Women's & Men's. It kind of dawned on me that on Sunday I'd mostly be finalizing my Frozen Four travel arrangements, then crashing. Or as my daughter would put it, "Chillaxing." I stuck to the plan.

Moving Forward: For the 5th Year In A Row, It's Been My Privilege To Follow A Participating Team To The Frozen Four. During The Previous Four Tournaments, I Haven't Written 3 Stars Posts. I've Simply Enjoyed The Tourney, Then Prepared a "Top Memories Of The Frozen Four" List Shortly After The Fact.

Let's Go Up To Minneapolis & Make Some Memories!

Cornell was definitely a better team than when we beat them 7-3 last fall in the Ice Breaker Tournament. Unfortunately for the Big Red, Ohio State had gotten better and was able to win earlier today by a final score of 4-2, advancing to the National Title Game to face Wisconsin, who defeated Minnesota by a final score of 6-2. The Buckeyes came out flying and took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on goals from Makenna Webster and Brooke Disher. Cornell came out determined in the second period and were able to tie the game at 2 on goals from Lily Delianedis and Kaitlin Jockims heading into the final intermission. The Buckeyes came out in the third period and got two goals from Joy Dunne to put this one away by a final score of 4-2. The Buckeyes outshot Cornell 42-29 in this one with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping 27 of the 29 shots she faced in the win. Cornell backstop Annelies Bergmann stopped 38 of the 42 shots she faced.

Congrats to Jen Gardiner on making Team Canada for worlds. Not so under the radar anymore, good for her.

Haven’t watched a ton of college hockey this year but with the short bench it sure seems everyone is getting lots of ice time. The transfers who didn’t have the star power of the previous years group, represented themselves very well. A credit to them and the coaching staff.

It will take a complete team game to beat Wisconsin tomorrow and Webster, Dunne and Thiele are going to need to be magical. Good luck!

Cornell gave us a tougher game than last time but in my mind there are two key things to have a chance to get past Wisconsin and they are stop allowing breakaways, the Badgers and especially Edwards are deadly on them and stay out if the penalty box! We have a good penalty kill but Wisconsin's PP is probably better.

Totally agree. If we are going to give ourselves a chance to be in this one, we can't take penalties, and we have to stay away from the 2-on-1s / 3-on2s, etc.. Wisconsin has so much firepower and they will make us pay on breakaways, as well as power plays. They are not a team you want to put on the power play.

greetings, Buckeyes....

I have two general admission tickets to the final tomorrow I'd be happy to sell y'all if anyone is interested or needs some. FWIW there should be plenty of open seats. I had no trouble finding one on Friday.

It'll have to be a transfer via a GopherSports.com account. Happy to meet up in person (I live near Ridder) if anyone is interested.

Go beat the badgers tomorrow, please.

We have tickets for tomorrow, but hopefully someone will take those off your hands. We will do our best tomorrow to beat the Badgers. I was actually surprised at some of the Minnesota fans rooting for Cornell yesterday seeing as our head coach and one of our assistants are former Gophers. I was rooting for the Gophers yesterday myself, although I was not exactly relishing facing the Gophers on home ice in a National Title Game. Hey, quick question, where is the general admission section at Ridder? Is it the section behind the goal on the end where you enter the arena? We are clear over in section 8 and I think that might be the Wisconsin section tomorrow. I waited too long to get our tickets and that is where we ended up. I might want to try and move. Thanks for any information you can provide. I love Ridder and think it is the best facility in the league. I hope we get something like that someday.

there is a squishy definition of what counts as GA. I think GA proper is a few rows between the band and the reserved seats in the sections behind the bench. but really, I think it's pretty much "if you're not there by puck drop, have any open seat."

Section 8 is the home net/far end from the entrance. i think that might be Wisconsin's end tomorrow, IDK. Ridder staff were conspicuously inactive Friday...even when the person two rows ahead of me tried to get them to do something about a drunk dude with a flask and got nothing. Scope out a decent place, if they're not filled by the first media time out, have at it.

StPaulSam, thanks for the tips!

I realize that nobody competes to win my admiration, but I was far more impressed with the team that came up short today. I'm sure this will be a hard one to get over, because there will be so many "what if" moments to look back on, but what a great effort.

The two many men penalty changer everything! 😢
Absolutely- two 2 many player penalties in national semi and championship games is inexcusable. It’s difficult enough to win these games- bench management mistakes will kill you, and ultimately did. It also appeared on replay that the penalty shot should not have been awarded as the player did not close hand on puck. Ouch

Ohio State also took a "too many" penalty in the waning minutes/seconds of the 2023 national championship, with Wisconsin holding on to a 1-0 lead.

Congratulations to the Wisconsin Badgers:
2025 NCAA Women’s Hockey National Champions.

The circumstances which flipped the title game were remarkably cruel; but that’s hockey.

In the end, it was just Wisconsin’s year. I’d argue we gave the Badgers the best competition of any opponent. There’s a little solace in that; but only a little.

Major thanks to the Buckeye Players and Coaches. You gave us a wonderful season.

I didn't see which girl went on the ice for the penalty. I wonder if she went on her own accord or if one of the coaches sent her over the boards.
On the penalty shot penalty, I'm always skeptical of any call that takes all that time to decide.

I think your team played outplayed my team more than my team outplayed your team in regulation. It took practically a miracle to tie it, penalty shots these days are advantage goaltender usually.

It was a brutal way to lose, but I am proud of the girls. They played their hearts out. Wisconsin was the better team going in, but we were right there with a chance to win at the end, and in an "off" year or "reloading" year where we were not supposed to even get this far. With the recruiting class Nadine has coming in next season, depth is not going to be an issue. Give the Badgers credit for finding a way. That is what championship teams do.

Kirsten Simms was $$$ on that penalty shot. Not much Amanda could do with that one. MJ sent the right player out there for that one.
