Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

Also, is AHA still using FloSports? Kinda piles more crap on the Holy Cross series in Worcester if so.

Looking at the schedule again, does it seem odd to anyone else that the Colgate series is at home? We just played Colgate in Orono last year, and if that is a home series it would mean 7/9 OoC games would be at home (maybe 7/10 if the Cornell Red Hot Hockey at MSG becomes reality). Wouldn't it make more sense for that series to be away, to make the return trip we presumably owe to Colgate and to have a more balanced OoC of 5 home, 4 away? That one sticks out to me and just seems really strange.

It is weird, but if the Maine series was at Colgate that would mean they would be hosting UNH, Maine and Lowell on consecutive weekends. Colgate has a history of not requiring return home trips for series (recently that includes Pedo State, BU and Maine).

Here is a full list of players (current/future/former) appearing at NHL Development Camps:

Red Wings • Albin Boija

Flyers • Maksim Sokolovskii
Mammoth • Ludvig Lafton | Brandon Holt

Panthers • Luke Coughlin
Hurricanes • Justin Poirier
Canadiens • Mikus Vecvanags

Think this team can be fine down the middle, but I'm mostly concerned about the lack of depth on the LW side. Unless you're swapping a couple guys to their off-wing it looks a little weak over there right now.

The Krebs addition to the backend is a bit of a headscratcher. 23 year old ECHL guy as a depth filler?
Would rather take Sokol for depth, especially w an already crowded d corp. Don’t think Krebs should be taking anyone else’s playing time when there are so many who can benefit from in-game development. Does feel like a Walsh guy though- 23 yr old freshman from Alberta etc. Could be a strange locker room fit though?

I know it would be atypical for Sokol to come rn based on his age/experience, but haven’t we learned our lesson about highest touted recruits not ending up on campus? Especially w agents involved and as it can widely be based on results/team culture reputation. Is he *that much* less ready than anyone else? I’m sure he won’t use 4 yrs of eligibility, so can the Flyers require he spend another yr in CHL because they like that dev environment more??

Hard disagree. Scholle isn’t a natural center and got exposed last year. Lipinski struggled to make the lineup down the stretch. Komarov is 4th liner. James is a depth guy/4th liner. Max Scott is good but he wasn’t as effective as his brother, Breen, or Renwick the year prior. When he got hurt they had no natural center playing their top 9. Makway projects as a depth guy.

Not good enough unless they are pigeon-holing someone else into that role. It was a major weakness last year and they seem to be relying on 2 guys to make a major jump which I think is irresponsible.

If Scholle is put at center again this will have been a massive waste of his time in Orono

Yup, am scared of Mistelbacher scenario - perhaps even more so given 27th pick.

That being said, how many teams historically have gotten more than 1 USNDPT player per season outside of BU, BC, Michigan, Minnesota?

Is this a tournament game?

Based on Briere's post-draft comments it sounds like he knows Sokolovskii has at least 3 more years of development ahead of him so not unreasonable to think the path will be OHL>NCAA>AHL. Obviously nothing left to be gained physically for him but his skating is better than most guys his size. Even without a ton of offensive upside no reason to think he couldn't have developed more to his game in Orono this season. Barr being with him at the draft is a good sign that he will actually be here next season.

I met a guy today who played at DU from '98-'03. He set the table for them to win the next 2 natty's - at Maine's expense. It was great to have the chance to talk a little college hockey with a guy who lived it. He played - mostly in the A, but overseas, and 8 games for the Thrashers. He played with Niko, and he figured a few other Maine guys. Played against a few as well.

Up until a couple years ago, kids were committing at younger ages than they are now. They have pushed back the age for recruitment and commitment in the past few years. Historically, a large portion of the NTDP guys have already committed before they got to the program. Now, they are largely also already committed or down the road far into talking to teams before they start there.

I am hoping that Maine lands Maverick MacKinnon. Though I am not sure if he is going to the program this fall? There has been a mass exodus from the program in the last year. It’s concerning what the new CHL rule is doing to the NTDP. Most of the Olympic US guys flowed through that program.
Lol well now I guess they’ll flow through CHL

Actually re: centers- I think in the Lipinski, max scott, klimpke group we should have at least 2 solid top 6 centers for a competitive NCAA team. Wish there was a little more speed and skating ability, but we know what to expect on that from Scott/Jaden

Defensive corp is deep (but so young). Probably could’ve used Nobes’ experience.. Maybe the 2-yr ECHL vet helps? I see the primary weaknesses as:
-Scheduling
-Goaltending
-Scoring prowess***
-Coaching (team culture/player development/recruit and player retention)

Credit where credit is due:
Holt and Harrison Scott are success stories. Frank D looked like one too for a second. Fowler might be one. Fingers crossed re: Gerrior, Pichette, Jaden, Usereau

Langlois and Peterson are studs, and Lukas especially seems like a really good kid and super bought in

My concern is that Barr’s OBVIOUS strengths are selling the program to talent and fundraisers. If the program (and particularly his) reputation sours, we’re stuck w nothing
