None of the 8 are up in 2026, this is the trick Schumer is playing on the rubes. The entire caucus is unified on the deal. These 8 are just taking the heat because they can afford to. The only reasonable position is to primary every D who won't call for removing Schumer.

Exaggerated but completely correct. The 8 took the fall for what was likely a couple dozen.

At least the GOP doesn't really hide who they are. The Dems are just as disgusted by the average person as the GOP.

This guy is trash but correct. The voters overwhelmingly approved of what the Dems were doing as priven by a huge night on Tuesday, the GOP was shooting itself in the dick, and The Dems decided to jump in the way of the bullet.

This is like a team having a huge blowout victory to keep the season alive and then benching the starters the next week with the playoffs on the line.

I think a lot of people are thinking it's just "none of the RIFs get to stay and no more illegal RIFs", rather than the "no RIFs, even if otherwise permissible by law, and if you try to do it it's a felony criminal offense under the Anti-Deficiency Act" that this actually is.

If this is true, then I think they just shut it down again in January if Trump reneges on this. It would seem we end up right here again.

At least as long as they keep passing these short term CRs.
 
They will have to drag Mike Johnson out of his jerk-off closet, since the last thing the House passed only funded to 11-21.

The anger I have seems to be tempered by the fact that the GOP keep on-side punting what should be deep drives with their funding bills. A shutdown is going to happen again.
 
Sorry dude that is severe cope overdose. You cannot keep doing this every few months...even if fiscally you could (you cant this is a cluster and causes severe issues...assuming the GOP even holds to the deal which they won't because they don't have to our want to) the voters are not going to just go along with this. People were willing to starve to back the Dems...voted in historic numbers to give them a mandate in an off year election and they couldnt even get a mediocre compromise. The Dems bent over and begged to get pegged with no lube.

Who is going to negotiate in January? Leadership is the same.

Sorry but that guy is out to lunch. He should stick to patents and apparently blocking people who tell him how the real world works.

(I get you are looking for a sliver of hope I usually try to as well...but pretending this is anything but a 5 alarm disaster and basically kills the momentum the Dems had after Tuesday is a bad idea. And another shutdown will be even worse and will likely cost the Dems the Midterms because it will be their fault)

And btw the DNC definitely endorsed this:

As this vote moves to the House, I stand with Democratic leadership as they refuse to rubber stamp the full-scale Republican assault on Americans’ health care and I am proud of the majority of Senate Democrats who opposed this vote.

That is not a good thing...and the voters won't support the Dems again on it because the Dems wont do anything to actually fight. People will suffer again and it will mean nothing...just like now.

What was the purpose of this shutdown? What was accomplished? Why will that change in January? Why will the GOP do anything different they know the Dems will cave as soon as Delta Airlines or some other corporation tells them too. The Dems couldnt even help force the GOP to nuke the filibuster and Trump was begging them to! The Dems quit cause they got what they wanted...not what we wanted mind you just them. They wanted it to look like they were fighting but really they were just sitting on their fat rich asses. Christ tbey couldn't even come up with good excuses or threats! "Its not working" and "shame on them". Shame on us we fell for it.

The rumor was the Dems would wait until after No Kings and when SNAP went broke. The idea was they figured that would be enough to satisfy the base. They are about to find out...

It wasnt just Trump voters who had leopards eat their faces. We all help tbe leopards get fat. At this point anyone who votes Dem is a sucker.

The purpose was to get concessions. They didnt get ACA but they weren’t going to get it even with the shutdown. They got an empty promise, but they also got a concession to prevent RIFs and millions of government workers get paid. That’s not nothing.

I’m not happy but you and I are both asking someone else to get gutted here. So I get the pressure to get something, anything, and have to get back to negotiations between now and January.
 
Even Centrist pricks like Matt Yglesius who love the losers who supported this is upset a deal was struck.

Please someone tell me what the point of this was? What did the Dems win...besides an election that will be offset next year when the voters revolt.
 
If the voters revolt in the generals they only have themselves to blame for not showing up in the primaries.

And then they get to live with the results.

Trump doesnt have to abide by any of that. The Court has not stopped his recision and if he says "no" it wont matter.

The workers not getting paid voted for Dems because they were holding out. They weren't asking the Dems to capitulate...they are upset at the deal. So that doesn't really work either.

The only pressure was put on by corporations...the people were blaming the GOP. The people being hurt wanted this to go on.
 
So far this is the most concise summary of what happened:

The Senate Democrats’ plan all along was to hold firm until last week’s elections, and then cave. They are executing on that plan. They never thought they could get much from Republicans; the main idea was to publicize the ACA expirations and to hammer this home next year. They probably think that the little they got was more than they originally expected.

Senate Democrats assumed long ago that holding firm until (say) Christmas would be a net minus for Democrats. Now we’ll have no way to know whether they were right, because they caved so quickly.

You may not like the plan, and I may not like the plan, but that was the plan.

Hence, Schumer orchestrated/blessed the 8, none of whom are immediately up for re-election. They took the heat. The calculation is the GOP will vote down ACA extensions and magically the American people will get 10x smarter than they have shown themselves to be up til now and we will have a blue wave in 2026.
