Well, we know the original system installed in 1949 lasted through the 1982-1983 season literally by its' fingertips. By that season delays for ice repair literally became expected and sometimes even involved spraying the ice with stuff fire extinguishers have in them. Whatever that stuff is it not only puts out fires but makes good enough ice to resume a hockey game. That original system lasted 33 calendar years which covered 34 seasons. Was in the neighborhood, so I drove by HFH this morning. There were no obvious signs (trucks, equipment, etc) indicating they were working on replacing the refrigeration / ice equipment, so I can only assume we'll be stuck with milky ice again this season. I thought I had read somewhere they were planning to get this work done this summer ??
The present system replaced that one in time for the 1983-1984 season. For comparison purposes, when the first puck of the 2025-2026 season is dropped on it, the system will be 43 years old in calendar years. However and unlike the original system, this fall the new one will also "only" be beginning its' 43rd season of service due to having one season off due to the program destroying shutdown.
As is the case with just about everything, there is a possible silver lining when and if the present system fails entirely and no hockey can be played at the Fieldhouse requiring games to be moved to an alternate site. Doubleheaders at the sparkling new casino arena with plenty of free parking for everyone!!! Possibly, though unlikely, even single admission ones just as MLB used to have back in the day. More realistically, especially when dealing with these greedy xxxxx, they would probably be day-night seperate admission doubleheaders just as MLB does these days.
