According to ESPN, Alex Avila is the starting catcher for the AL.

Miguel Cabrera is a reserve. And that's it.

No Martinez, no Peralta. No word on the last player vote yet.

Ryan Raburn saves our 'cheeks in left field to end the 8th.

Yes, that Ryan Raburn. That is not a mis-print.

Rick Knapp fired as pitching coach

            Jeff Jones becomes pitching coach.

I don't like this move. They fired the wrong coach. I wonder what the excuse is for not ****canning McClendon...

McClendon is going to to be the interim manager in August when Leyland finally loses his ****.

Some very interesting rankings I've found on MLB.com

                Offense:
AVG: 3rd in MLB at .268, 1 point behind STL
SLG: 4th in MLB, all 3 teams ahead of them are AL teams
OBP: T-4th in MLB with the Mets
OPS: 4th in MLB, 1 point ahead of STL
                11th in HR's, 6th in runs scored.

Needless to say, my eyebrows are raised.

                Pitching:
ERA: 26th in MLB. Only BAL, CHC, KCR and HOU are worse
SO: 22nd in MLB. Surprisingly, Cleveland is next to last. KCR, CLE, MIN are the bottom 3
WHIP: 26th in MLB. BAL, KCR, CHC & HOU are worse
                BB: 7th highest walk total.

Upon further review, it's not overly difficult to see why Knapp was shown the door.

Also, 25th in Fielding %, and 26th in range factor. 7th most errors in baseball. We are not good defensively, either, folks.

at this level, how much does the coach really matter? Can you blame him for bad pitching and praise good- or is it more what he has to work with?

                    Really asking here....

                    • Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 1 - The Lou Whitaker version

I think we have plenty of talent on our pitching staff. It would be different if we were looking at what we had 6-7 years ago. If a pitching coach has AA-caliber talent, it's not going to matter too much what he does. I don't believe that to be the case here.

I guess I look at it from a standpoint of preparation and progression. If pitchers consistently get bombed out of the ballpark in the first couple innings, that shows a either a lack of talent on the pitcher's part, or a lack of proper preparation attributable to both the pitching coach and the pitcher. Given what we have in the rotation, I don't think it's lack of talent. We've been getting hit too hard, far too often, over too many pitchers as of late.

If a young pitcher does not show signs of progression, where you can see that over time he's getting better, at this level that tends to be pretty damning of the pitching coach. I think we're starting to see some of that with Porcello, and to a certain extent, Scherzer.

If all of a sudden the pitcher starts getting shelled, or velocity drops by a few MPH, that indicates either a flaw in mechanics or a potential injury. It's up to the pitching coach to see if there's an adjustment to be made to the mechanics, and if there isn't, well, then we know what the next course of action is. I think we might be looking at that with Porcello as well, too.

The starting pitching has gotten bombed as of late, Verlander exempted. I doubt the whole rotation has arm troubles, so that leaves either mechanics or poor game planning. Upon further review, while I liked Rick Knapp, I lay a good deal of the blame for our recent troubles at his feet. A game or two where a pitcher gets bombed out by the 4th inning, I can live with. It happens to every pitcher once in a while. But we're almost 2 weeks into going and getting the starting pitcher in the 5th inning. We had 3 or 4 straight games where we gave our starter at least 6 runs, and only once in that span was the starting pitcher able to get through 5 innings. I'll give you one good guess as to who that starter was, and no, it wasn't Phil Coke.

I hope that starts to answer some of your question.

The Tigers got a gift there. Chalk flew up on that "foul" ball.

Too bad we've hit into about 13 double plays.
