Class act. It would be one of the all-time great stories if he's able to come to Boston, end 86 years of suffering, then go to Chicago and win their first World Series in over a century.
At the press conference today, Ben Cherington announced at John Lackey will have Tommy John surgery in the offseason. Sure casts a little bit of a different light on things. Doesn't change his personality, and doesn't say anything about whether it was the best thing for the team or him to pitch hurt. But it does provide a plausible explanation for the drastic dropoff in performance and does give us some hope that he will pitch better in the future.
He made $12 million this year and the reported AAV for the new contract is $12.5 million / year. Modest increase in salary, so either he really wanted a change of scenery or the Sox were not in the same AAV or length of contract.

as soon as paplebon was deemed a type A he was gone. the red sox coveted the draft picks too much to hang on to a bullpen arm that they see as a commodity. you could argue that ortiz is in for the same fate except for the fact that his 30/100 is not as easy to replace on the open market.. if you even assume he can contribute that again.
i dont think this means that boston is going after heath bell or ryan madson, either, because they will have to give the draft pick back to get them. (though they would still net 1 sandwich pick). the sox also have that history of watching someone walk away and replace them on the cheap. think coco crisp for johnny damon.
Because... they were not in the same AAV or length of contract.

I don't like Papelbon leaving. The thought I believe is anybody can close out games, but I don't think that's true. If you have a closer you know is solid, instead of having to find a new one every couple of years, a team should try to hang onto him. If they thought something was wrong with him (injuries, etc) fine, but I don't want to hear the team crying poverty when they gave the same amount of money to Dice-K's Japanese team just to be able to offer him a contract. Bard isn't a bad pitcher, but I wish he had more than just a fastball. As Texas' closer can attest to, major league batters can catch up to a 99 mile an hour straight fastball if they're waiting for it.

I don't think that's the thought. I think the thought is more that, while Papelbon is very, very good at what he does, he's not 5 years / $60 MM good, and they can find somebody who can close out games adequately well for a lot less money than that.
