So I'm watching the Rays-Yanks game after the Sox were done last night. Instead of "resting" all their players, I watched Sabathia throw 125 or so pitches going into the 8th inning and only getting taken out when he got into trouble. Then with the bases loaded in a tie game in the bottom of the inning with two outs, 500 year old decrepit geezer Jorge Posada comes off the bench to rifle a base hit that drove in two runs and clinched the division. Mind you, this is from a team who's playoff birth is assured, playing against an opponent fighting for their lives. This attitude is something the Sox sorely need, and its called "playing to win".
Compare that with Boston, where God knows when Buccholz will pitch again, Bedard is given the week off during cruch time, Beckett missed time, etc. The time to ease up on pitchers is when a playoff spot has been clinched, not a month beforehand.

Actually, it was Girardi trying to get CC to 20 wins. I doubt we see this effort if he isn't on the mound.
The Yankees are still playing for homefield. Once they wrap that up, then they'll take it easy. I like that approach as long as they don't mishandle their only good starting pitcher.
On 8/23/74 the Red Sox were 7 games in front in the AL East. When the season ended 40 days later, they were in 3rd 7 games out. This is eerily similar.
This is not a slam at Beckett or Lester, but the team is missing that "stopper" they had in years past. Guys like Pedro and Clemens took it upon themselves to end losing streaks whenever they took the mound. I'm guessing Sabathia plays that role in NY. One of these two guys needs to step up with a complete game 1 run outing to right the ship.

shoulda traded lester for oswalt years ago...
a legend and an out of work bum look a lot alike, daddy.
Whoa whoa whoa. If anything, Lester's the best pitcher on the staff. Albeit, that's not saying much, but he's been better than Beckett the past 2 years.

In light of today's start, do you wish to reconsider?
Maybe we should get the anti death penalty folks to gather around Fenway with candles to pray that the execution be stopped. Me, I am on a death watch.

Now, Beckett for Oswalt...
Hasn't been the same since the LAT injury. He can't be 100%
