  • Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

What I like best was that Bautista hit a bomb to give the Jays some hope of a comeback, then they score five to stomp out the hope. I was worried that they weren't punishing Drabek enough for his wildness, but once he started getting wild in the strike zone, they took care of business.

Best record in the American League??? After the start they had, did anyone think they'd be here at this point in the season?

        Nope. Pretty unbelievable.

Now watch them get swept in Tampa and fall back behind the Yankees.

Not this quickly, for sure. They are only 1 win behind Philly for a tie for best record in MLB.

First place / best record only counts after the last game of the season. I / we have seen too many times a first place Sox team in June playing golf in October.

Well, yeah, look who you're talking to here. I'm just kind of amazed that they are where they are NOW. June 13th. It's been a pretty awesome turnaround from where they were then to where they are now. I agree that it doesn't matter that they're in first place now if they aren't in October, but just to get there this soon after looking like crap in April is impressive. To me, anyway.

I concur...they might not make the playoffs, they might lose the first series but we were all worried that something was fundamentally missing and they might have a disaster of a season which would lead to a dismantling. Would Tito be fired, would we unload popular players, was Theo washed up? Those thoughts were floating around.

If only to have some validation that Gonzalez was a good pickup, Francona can still coach, keeping Jacoby was the right move, Youk could go home again, Papi wasn't washed up, beckett is still a #2 at least, I'm happy to see what they've done regardless of the final outcome...I'd rather be where they are vs. a lot of other teams...it is still an indicator that they will be in the mix.

I won't frustrate you with a prediction Scarlet...but I think we have a better chance of watching the sox in October than we did two months ago.

One down. Quick game and Shields pitched lights out.

Thoughts on Miller potentially being called up? He had 10 Ks tonight in AAA and needs to be called up soon to keep him from opting out. With Wakefield chasing history and actually pitching very well, its hard to see where he would fall into the rotation. Wake threw 119 pitches tonight, so maybe Miller takes his start in the rotation for a spot start to see what the kid has.

I've seen conflicting reports. And just to be clear, he doesn't have to opt out if he doesn't get called up.

Lost in all the Bruins celebration was a gem pitched by Josh Beckett last night. He was one dribbler away from a no-hitter! Can you imagine if he had thrown one the night the Bruins won the Stanley Cup???

Kind of like Roger Clemens' 20 strikeout game when all the attention and reporters were at a Celtics playoff game.
