        Copying the ACC's hope of getting Miami-Florida State yearly with Ohio State-Michigan is idiotic. You're hoping that the two teams finish tops in their divisions, despite one blowing a crossover game yearly vs. the other. Good luck with that. For instance, FSU is a slight dog in their own division because they have Miami as a crossover while one of the other Atlantic favorites has Virginia *and* Duke. Ironic that the two "smartest" leagues can't get it right while the yokels in the Big 12 and SEC manage.

        It's worse because unlike the ACC, the Big Ten will do just fine with title games not involving their two biggest names. Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, and Penn State all alone will bring near sellouts yearly. The ACC maybe has Va Tech and Clemson.

          Which means each pair is broken between divisions. OK, that makes sense. What it really means is that there are 6 teams you will always play and then 5 teams which you will miss... how often? If the B10 conference schedule is 9 games, that means you miss 2 of the 5 each year, or you miss any given one twice every five years. Right?

            This is different from them playing each other annually in the same division... how?

              The one tweek I would make with it is have Iowa be the protected rival of Nebraska. Those two should be natural rivals.

                    Iowa and Nebraska are in the same division, so they will play each other every year.

                    Teams will play:
                    * The other 5 teams in their own division.
                    * Their cross-division "protected" rival.
                    * Two of the other 5 teams (possibly 3 of the other 5 if they go to the 9-game schedule starting in 2015).

                    "The game of hockey, though much in vogue on the ice in New England and other parts of the United States, is not much known here."

                        Hmmmm.... Not saying that the reports are wrong, but take a look at how the helmets are arranged on the Big Ten Network home page. At first glance, I like this split a lot more, even down to the point that the "opposite" helmet could be the protected crossover game in many instances.

                            That would indicate killing off PU/IU, MN/WI, and IL/NW... Interesting theory, but I just can't see the B10 being THAT dumb...

                                If you hover over the image on the Big Ten Network home page, the picture is identified as "Big Ten Helmet Divisions."

                                Also, Purdue/Indiana and Northwestern/Illinois could be protected rivalries in this arrangement.
