It seems the WAC is getting ... WAC'd.

Indeed, they're going to have to start looking at the D1-AA's ASAP if they want to remain in business. Biggest prize there would be Montana. Might take a look at UC-Davis as well....

Back in the day, the WAC used to be the 2nd biggest conference in the west, after the Pac-10. Times have sure changed. Even before the recent departures, the WAC had a bit of a mish-mash/thrown together feel, with teams from Louisiana to Hawaii. Now it's substantially worse. And it's hard to see where they pick up much quality to refill the ranks. Tough spot to be in for the WAC if this all plays out the way it looks.

Wasn't the WAC the original SuperConference with 16 teams?

I think so, although I don't think that lasted long and I don't think it was ever very viable.

The Mountain West split off from the 16 team WAC. Almost have to wonder what would have happened with the BCS if they did manage to stick together a little longer. All together, they might have gotten themselves a seat at the BCS table.

I bet the next domino to fall might be Louisana Tech to the Sun Belt. They were a school that got hosed on the wrong side of the WAC/MWC split, and well, if I was their AD, I would be calling them up because as of right now, they're a far more stable conference, and they're right within the Sunbelt's footprint.

I'd probably call Conference USA first. The Sunbelt is and will likely remain the worst conference in D-IA by a large margin. It will be interesting if the MWC is capped at 12 teams, what happens to the stragglers out west. There maybe some viable candidates already mentioned for promotion from D-1AA (but I wouldn't count on Davis or SLO riding to the rescue with the current UC/CSU budget constraints), but if that doesn't materialize, then what?

In through the nose, out through the mouth
In through the nose, out through the mouth-

repeat- we'll be ok, vandals, we'll be ok, vandals....

While everything is still up in the air, the "collapse" of the WAC is a long way off- neither Fresno nor Nevada can compete until 2012, I hear. If you are going to correct- find the right teams, and do it well.

I agree that LTU really isn't a great fit, but Idaho and they came from the Sun Belt a few years ago- terrible and WAY to big of a conference. I honestly can't fathom a Louisiana team that's a small school being ok with travelling to the reaches of the west..

There are quite a few quality choices that can make the move, and there's still a lot of talk how Utah State turned down the MWC, and that they are working with BYU- so this thing still may work out for the WAC.

But don't be rash. I'm betting there is more hope than much else in the MWC, and that the WAC just needs to stabilize to be like the MAC. Then the both could work together to get better. WAC teams need to integrate their locations with the PAC10 like many MAC teams have done with the Big 10.

                    We'll be ok.

                    We'll be ok.

                    really.

                    We'll be ok.

(and D1-AA isn't that bad, at least you get a REAL NCAA trophy for winning that)

C-USA is already at 12 teams. While there is always the threat of them themselves getting raided, I'm not sure they would be interested of just adding a team just to protect the rest of the schools. Besides, C-USA could probably call anybody in the Sunbelt right now if say the Big East swipes Memphis and Marshall, and those Sunbelt schools would jump.

C-USA would take the call, humor them a bit, as in this day in age it would probably be bad for them to burn bridges with anybody that they might later on need. But as of right now, I don't see C-USA needing schools that badly at this moment.

Interesting twist, as Hawaii is now considering going independent!

Not sure what to think of it, though it's hardly a vote of confidence in the WAC.

There article mentions Montana as moving to D-1 without a full 16 sports. If that happens, it could open a whole can of worms for 1-AA or d-II teams

Indeed, losing Montana and/or another school would be a big blow to the Big Sky, which in turn would probably go after other D1-AA schools as well. That could reach easily into the Midwest, where the Missouri Valley might want to look into picking up UND and USD to keep NDSU and SoDakSt State happy. My money would be on those schools wanting to get back together. And there is that crazy theory that UNO in Omaha would want to move up to D1-AA, inviting them and adding the other 2 Dakota's would bring the MVC to a nice even number of 12.

There actually is a Hawaiian sovereignty movement, but they'd rather keep the hoale around for the checks. They just want the right to party as an indigenous, protected minority, or something.
