That's going to put a crimp in the MWC's plan to get a BCS berth.
This whole thing is making me giggle like a drunk sorority chick.

Over on the Idaho boards, there at least a half dozen threads talking about this- and moreso how it's going to bury Boise State.

Apparently both Nevada and Fresno have been approaced to join the MWC, BUT just after BSU left, the WAC decided on levying a $5M fee for anyone wanting to leave. Pretty clever. So both schools politely said no.

And, to spite Bozo State, they have decided to levy a fee IF they ask to come back.

Half of the Vandal comments are laughing at the comments on 'donk boards about how bad this is becoming.

"Why?" is, indeed a really good question. And one must seriously ask what is up with the non football association with the WAC???? Who expected that?

What most people are reading is that BYU was VERY unhappy with the TV contract the MWC had (I think it was Versus), and that they were in the process of making their own "Mormon Tv" network- to the point of very, very heavy investment in HD broadcasting capabilities. I have a feeling that even with the very few areas where they might get picked up, the "LDSTV" would make a whole lot more money than any deal outside of the B10 Network. Well, unless BYU magically became UT or something silly like that.

For Football- I think the MWC was good for power, bad for where they need to play to support their base. Outside of Utah, that is. Remember there's a BYU Hawaii, and apparently they want to play Nevada and other California schools for their base.

And BYU isn't like other regional mountain schools- they have a fan base spread out all over. Of course- it is centered in Utah and SE Idaho. But its a lot more spread out than even Colorado is.

Appears to be official now regarding BYU.

And the MWC chances at a BCS bid were gone when Utah decided to leave for the Pac 10/12.

The problem with the BCS is that they don't split the money with just the MWC. The money that Boise and TCU "earned" last year from going to the BCS was shared by ALL of the non-BCS conferences equally. So the individual teams only got a very small share of that money.

From the way things seem to be heading, I have to believe that BYU has gotten assurances from someone that they would get a good TV deal (I'm thinking ESPN) for them to go through with this. Plus, they could get a pretty good schedule of games to make themselves more attractive. And they really only need to find a couple bowls willing to carve out 1 year every 4 to invite them and they might be able to do better than they are now (or will be able to do without Utah).

It also looks like the MWC conference could be in real trouble, as there are talks that Boise would be welcomed back to the WAC if they wanted, without penalties. TCU would almost certainly look elsewhere (maybe even the Big East) at that point.

Can't say I've ever watched it, just that I've scrolled by it why channel flipping. My recollection is that is was pretty dry stuff, but I guess they could spice it up with football and maybe other stuff if they wanted. But I don't know if it goes at all beyond places like AZ and Utah that have large Mormon concentrations.

I wonder if BYU's current contract with the MWC prevents it from showing sports on it's own channel?

People are getting blisters on their fingers over on the school message boards out west.

The most recent "update" is that neither Nevada nor Fresno signed the above agreement, so that they are both poised to accept an invite from the MWC this evening.

I have no idea if it's true- these are based on "insiders" from both reno and fresno papaer.

this could be an interesting evening for the mountain time zone.

And has been commented on my vandal board- this is one INTERESTING off season.

this is nuts- both Fresno and Nevada have admitted to signing the agreement, yet both have accepted the MWC invite, and plan on paying the fine.

On top of that, there are new rumors that BYU is just posturing so that they WOULD get Nevada and Fresno into the MWC, basically killing the WAC.

The only intersting other tidbit is that the fresno and nevada acceptance came too late for them to join 2011, and it will be 2012, so the new hope for WAC fans is that UNLV and San Diego will come to the WAC, and BYU indeed pulls football independant and rest to WAc.

                      I'm so lost.

(but there have been some rather interesting threads about BSU's acedemics, or lack thereof, being strongly noted by the Idaho state board of education... I wonder where that will go)

I read at least one article that talked about BYU using their own network to avoid sharing revenues, so I'm guessing they can. I can't think of why they couldn't, unless there is some conference-wide blanket commitment elsewhere.

Interesting editorial in the AZ Republic raising concerns about possible BYU scheduling problems. The article notes that teams in general aren't real excited about playing BYU because BYU typically has older players, due to players going on Mormon mission trips after high school and then returning to play for BYU.

Unless they join the Pac10/12, Hawai`i is never going to play in another bowl on the continent again.

Almost wonder if Hawaii would get smart and talk to the Bowl Committees there on the Island, see if they can't get a deal where they bring those bowls to the MWC. Give them somewhere to put their mid-tier teams to go. Might be enought to sweeten the deal to get them into the MWC. That, plus then teams in the MWC would be allowed to schedule 13 games a year. Additional revenue there. Not much else left of value in the WAC left after that.
