The football stadium there is decent at least. The team stinks, but the stadium is all right. Sitting in the upper deck looks rather perilous though.

If you think it's crazy now, just wait till the phase 2 expansion. The end zone seats look like Millennium Force.

BYU considers going independent in football, moving to the WAC for their other sports

              http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5472642

That's going to put a crimp in the MWC's plan to get a BCS berth.

How does this benefit BYU? I figure this conference is only a step or two away from an autobid. Like you said, this might kill that idea (certainly it would put it in doubt).

Doesn't make sense to me. BYU doesn't have the pull to get a Notre Dame type deal.

Maybe they figure this way they won't be limited to a conference schedule and can play two or three games at the same time. Mormon Style.

I think their belief is that they can get a decent TV deal that may pay them more money than they would get from the MWC. They will fill their schedule with WAC teams, plus probably the service academies and a BCS team or 2 each year, so they expect to get into a decent bowl every season, where they would keep all of the bowl money. And if they have a special season, they could get a BCS invite, where they would keep all of that money as well.

I wonder if they just aren't happy about Boise entering the conference and with Utah gone, there's no reason for them to stay in the MWC.

And just who do they think they're going to get the money from? I don't think there's a line of networks ready to bang on their door for BYU athletics. As for the BCS bid, they're likely far better off staying in the MWC and getting that BCS auto-bid and splitting the money that way, ensuring a steady stream of income.

Agreed. If it were very easy to do, it seems a lot of other schools would be doing it, rather than the shift over time to most teams being in conferences.

Or just spread out and knock on the doors of opposing teams to ask them for a few hours of their time. The game program will provide info on players and guidance for your spiritual life.
