I still think a 16 team football conference would be absolutely ridiculous.
Back when the WAC was 16 teams (before the MWC split off), they had 4 pods of 4.

    YEARS 1, 4, 7, 10...:
    Division A--Pod 1, Pod 2
    Division B--Pod 3, Pod 4

    YEARS 2, 5, 8, 11...:
    Division A--Pod 1, Pod 3
    Division B--Pod 2, Pod 4

    YEARS 3, 6, 9, 12...:
    Division A--Pod 1, Pod 4
    Division B--Pod 2, Pod 3

You play all 7 of your in-division opponents plus 1 rotating team in the other division. So, theoretically, you can set up a 12-year rotation where you play the teams in your own pod 12 times each and the teams in the other 3 pods 5 times each. That comes to 96 games in 12 years or 8 conference games a year. The problem, of course, would be setting up the pods without causing the conference to break up before it got started. I'm not sure that would be possible in either the Big Ten or the Pac Ten in their rumored 16-team incarnations.

However you do it, you need 2 divisions of 8, with a round robin within the division and 1 crossover game. Maybe 2 or 3 crossover games, but that would take a fight to implement.

      I'd say they're equal.

Edit: I'll drop KSU to a D in football, too. They really had only one strong period, and it colored my judgment unduly.

Yah, that's about how I'd rate them. I'm skeptical that Snyder's return is going to resurrect Kansas State football to its glory during his first run, given their records the last couple years before Snyder left the first time.

I think part of it, and admittedly I don't have a close read on the pulse of Kansas issues, but I've always had the feeling like there is more following of Kansas in the area than Kansas State, so Kansas just has a higher overall profile.

There is. I had a friend who went to KSU and she said they were always the redheaded stepchild to the Jayhawks. Not as bad as Iowa State to Iowa, but more like Michigan State to Michigan.

USC has filed an appeal. Expect that if this fails, USC will go right to court.

Believing the word of a convicted felon over that of a Coach is quite ludicrous.

Oh, we don't have any proof you know, but we think you knew so, bam.

Interesting. So they only passed legislation in 2007 that would allow them to take away BCS titles from teams that used ineligible players.

I love the arrogance of the NCAA. Who cares about ex post facto. We do what we want.

              • I thought the NCAA didn't have any hand in the bowl system and the BCS was a non-NCAA construct and if so, how exactly does the NCAA bar USA from playing a BCS game? That might be a really stupid question, but I'm missing something.

They can make them ineligible for postseason play, I don't know how it works because lets be honest, all the bowl games aren't NCAA games technically.

I thought and still think that dx's assertion that KU could pay for itself in the Integer is groundless. That's independent of the overall athletic budget and based purely on what KU would add to the Integer in terms of increases in TV and league-wide (rather than school-specific) revenue. Their big sport is basketball, which doesn't pay (Big East teams are only getting about $2 MM/school for basketball). The best TV market they have to offer is a poor one, Kansas City.

ND could pay for itself (as I've noted, I believe that in a good year ND is getting about the same equivalent to a conference payout as the Integer teams are). Texas could. Maybe one of the northeast teams like Rutgers or Syracuse could if they really substantially increase access in the NYC area, though I question either team's ability to do so. Just about anyone could as the 12th team if a title game is added, because the title game alone will run around $15 MM, give or take, but Nebraska just scarfed up that slot.

(I will add that I put the burden of proof on dx because his/her definitive statement implied that s/he had the numbers at hand or could at least begin to point me to a source.)

Did you overlook the part where your own assistant coach knew about it, never told anyone, and tried to cover up that he knew about it?

Also, your histrionics about how awful the punishment is are a little overdone. It's about equal to what Miami got. They lost 31 scholarships over three years.

I think Baylor got pre-empted when Colorado jumped to the head of the line. It doesn't help that they don't have nearly the political pull in terms of alums in key positions that they had when the SWC dissolution happened.

I don't think Kansas would be a detriment either. They wont raise the amount each team makes like a Texas or Notre Dame will, but I dont think the member schools will lose anything should they join. JMHO though.

As far as I know it does. It's the full share... payout from the Integer network (on the order of $6 to $7 MM), payout from their deal with ESPN/ABC, and payout from the bowl pool. I could be wrong, though... I didn't work the figure up myself, I'm re-using stuff I've seen in discussions elsewhere.
