I got a surprise package in the mail from him last week. This years (2010) Notre Dame football shirt. Nice shirt. Love the green color of it. Immediately became my new favorite shirt. He has gotten one for my brother, himself and me every year since 2002 I think. This time though it came with a handwritten letter from my dad. Something he doesnt do very often. He talked of being dizzy at times and having headaches of course. But it was fairly upbeat otherwise. He knew that I was planning on coming home sometime in July for 10 days or so. He was already wanting to know exact dates so he could plan stuff out. Wants to golf and fish and have cookouts. I think he is trying to stay positive yet realistic though. When I talked to him on the phone shortly after we found out about this he seemed to have an attitude of "If they can do something..Great. If they can't oh well I will just keep on doing what I do."

Anyone else out there with the need for good thoughts? Good news to share?
Let us know how the appointment goes. I get the feeling he's going to be fine though.

That really stinks. Prayers for you, your wife, those whose lives you touch and those taking care of her.

Re: A Thread for prayers, good vibes and what have you

A good friend of mine and his famly could use some prayers.

In December, my friend was diagnosed with Large B Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphona. Diagnosed as a stage 4 cancer, the main culprit came from the left hip area where he was experiencing severe pain. He began chemo treatments. After completing 5 treatments 3 weeks apart he was doing very well. He was however still experiencing pain in his left hip. Treament required radiation, 25 treaments every day but weekends. Radiation was much harder on him. He experienced many side affects, but through it all remained very positive and determined to overcome any obstacle in his way. Following the last treatments of radiation, he seemed to be responding well. He is facing another set back as yesterday doctors discovered the cancer had spread into his spinal fluid and the lining his brain.

gmann and pro...you and yours are in my thoughts.

Dad's appointment got pushed to the 8th. He is going to Indiana University hospital and he was told that its not uncommon for the wait from the first call to the day of the appointment to be long. Again I guess if they felt it was more serious he would have gotten in earlier. He told me the type of tumor that he thinks it might be (or at least what the last one was) but I cant remember it.

Dad's surgery is scheduled for the 29th at the university hospital in Indianapolis. He has a low grade astrocytoma which is the same thing he had several years ago. From what I understand, typically they aren't extremely serious although higher grades are (Teddy Kennedy had a grade 4). I don't know which grade level he actually has though.

Doc says the surgery itself will be tricky. This one is deeper than the last one and the blood vessels around it also make it difficult. Some of which may have already been weakened by the first one. Radiation may also be neccessary this time since the doc may not be able to remove the whole thing. My dad is confident that the doc will do a good job and that they can get this thing out. My concern is the after effects. After the last one he had so many problems (build up of fluids basically crushing his brain, permanent loss of taste and smell). Just want this one to go smoothly and not have more complications.

Continued prayers your way. If your Dad has a shunt in place already that might prevent some of the build up like last time. It still sounds pretty scary!
