it also was a hard hit, and a little from behind. but cooke didn't bring up any elbow (unlike the boston sportscaster keeps yelling) and made contact to savard's head because savard was low on the follow through. hockey hit. not a penalty (as it worked out on the ice). if they post suspend him now in "tom brady penalty" fashion, so be it. if the bruins want revenge next time they play the pens, so be that as well - it'll give them something to look forward to in an otherwise ****ty season.

Why don't you just go search and pull up crazycanuck's old posts from a few years ago defending this clown. It'll save the effort of you "thinking".

That was an absolute strafe and Cooke knew what he was doing. He could have just as well knocked him over... instead he lined up his head and he had plenty of time not to do so.

edit: I'll retract part of that... Cooke couldn't hope to hit Savard down to the ice with a hit direct to the body...look how far back he had to come. Regardless, that hit was made with an intentional indifference to the impact... these things are usually emotions of the moment... and frankly Cooke has some ****-poor gut decision process when it comes to this stuff.

I don't expect him to admit what he did, its not like he was a stand up guy before with some sort of principles. But to actually lie and to say it was shoulder to shoulder then make a claim that he had been hit the same way one shift earlier? Come on.

I want to know why it isn't this considering 75.2 (ii). Unless we want to claim that no checking foul can be considered unsportsmanlike.

The NHL is meeting right now to discuss concussions and head shots in Florida, where a panel of 8 or 9 guys is giving their findings to the GM's Monday.

The easiest thing to do is to say any blow to the head is an automatic 2 minutes, with a 4 minute double or 5 minute option based on severity, just like with high sticking and blood. Right now, a shoulder to the head is a legal play.

They could announce it Tuesday morning for that night's games. It took them about 24 hours to make Avery's stickwaving antics in front of Brodeur a penalty a couple years back, so there's no reason why they can't do this.

From the Boston Globe: Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a concussion as a result of an elbow by Matt Cooke at 14:23 of the third period. According to Claude Julien, Savard was knocked unconscious momentarily. Savard will remain in Pittsburgh overnight while his teammates travel to Toronto.

Julien said he expects Savard to be out "for a while." Julien termed it a classic blind-side hit.

Holy crap. Cooke was aiming for the head and got it. That's disgusting. He should be gone for a while - 10 games, maybe more.

Right now, a shoulder to the head is a legal play.

Incidental contact is one thing and I don't want to see players penalized for accidents but this was at best indifferent contact... sorta like how negligent homicide is indifferent murder.

A large number of high sticking penalties tend to be incidental where the stick bounces off the other guys stick upwards or some other way.

Better to just take the decision away from the officials.

Mook, sorry my man, but you're wrong on this one. Look at the infamous hits to the head just this year: this one, and Aaron Marvin's on Blake Geoffrion, and Patrice Cormier on whoever it was in Quebec -- that was the worst; definitely beyond the other two -- but they're basically the same play: They all line up a guy blind-side, then turn right at the last second to just plausibly claim to be not behind. It's a punk move. It's like in basketball when somebody sticks their a55 out when you're up in the air; it makes you flip over and break your neck, and the guy can try and say, "Hey man, I was just standing there. You're trying to make the game all touchy-feely." B.S. Plus, you know hockey. You want to line someone up, knock them for a loop when their head is down? You do it right: straight on (like Shaughnessy or Grier would have done). Or, if it's really shoulder-to-shoulder, it sends the other guy flying through the air, cause you've knocked his feet out from under him. Look at all these hits; the guy who's hit doesn't go flying ten feet through the air; they drop, cause they've been elbowed in the head. This is an issue because it's a punk move, not because people want hockey to be un-physical.
