Difference is Germany had their fascist revolution already so they are wise to it and play no games. We haven't gone full authoritarian yet so our arrogance/ignorance is killing us. In theory once we get past this the newer version of our democracy will be stronger because we won't let our naivete allow for holes that can exploited.

People vote to give up their democracy for the promise of cheaper eggs. Demagogues are always able to capitalize on religious, racial, and ethnic Othering to divide and conquer. All they need is a bad economy -- or even just the illusion of a bad economy.

And while the Right has the inside track on authoritarian takeovers, since the rich by nature rely on dividing people to protect their exploitation, nothing says the Left can't do it, too. If you're a conservative enjoying the current run of neofascism, those chickens can come home to roost.

What happens when Dump's inept Band of Grifters doesn't make things better -- indeed, make things way worse? A Lefty Demagogue could easily make a run. Not AOC or Omar -- not people who get fear painted by the GOP as Lefties. I mean the real thing. Huey Long on steroids. Lock up the (((rich))) and return their fortunes to The People.

The Righties who laugh about the subversion of our democratic institutions by the Roberts Court, because they are the ones who benefitted, are going to be singing a different tune then. Unitary Executive Theory won't seem like such a trivial detail.

You can't make stupid people smart. Especially when those stupid people think they are actually smarter than all those "elites" who just look down upon them.

We saw it with Covid. You can't convince them of something they don't want to be convinced of, no matter how many facts, or proof, or actual science you can show them. They know they're right, cause they "did their own research", and anyway, you elitists don't know any better than me anyway, everyone knows I'm right, it's just common sense.

And that's just how they go about voting too. Nothing you can say to them can convince them that Democrats aren't just pedophile groomers looking to change the sex of their kids. Everyone knows this. They feel this(from the group that says 'fuk your feelings'). It's just common sense.

On my Facebook feed the other day, there was one of those obvious fake Russian trollbot posts about how Tom Hanks was gonna leave the country now that Trump's president. One of the replies was some guy who said something like, "doesn't matter, they all need to be hunted down and made to pay for their crimes"

How do you combat something like that?

walrus is obviously disingenuous, however I think we should take him up on the idea. If we're so smart, why can't we figure out a way to win elections?

I give you these Ten Commandments:

1. Give up on stupid people ever getting smarter. This means rational policy positions during elections don't matter. Promise whatever.

2. Give up on selfish people ever caring about others. This means encouraging people based on the ethical consequences of their votes is pointless. Demonize electoral opponents and announce all evil stems from them, regardless of fact. Bully and threaten retribution.

3. Take a lesson from the GOP and start lying to the stupid people. The conservatives come from business so they understand how to market. Frighten. Exaggerate. Lie. Ever since Reagan this has been the core of Republican messaging, and it has gotten the derps to vote against their own interests again and again. We need to start doing that.

4. There are no consequences, period. Dump is the great inflection point of understanding the masses. The enlightenment notion that the masses have a core of moral good is wrong. The liberal notion that the masses can be educated is wrong. The Left notion that the masses can be taught to understand their class interests so they can lead is atrociously wrong. Anybody who met these people growing up should never have fallen for these hyper-intellectualized fantasies. These are barnyard animals. Stop lifting them up, it only annoys them and hurts your back.

5. Operate from strength. You never win by losing. There are no moral victories. Fight just as hard and just as dirty as the other guys.

6. Divide and conquer. The only divergence in theory between Left and Right that ever mattered was what to do with the economic losers. The Left prescribed assistance, the Right said the devil take the hindmost. Adopt both positions, and colonize both parties. Again: take walrus up on his idea. Stop being principled and start winning. The policy you argue for in the marketplace is just a method of gaining power. Once in power you can keep power from the derps; that is the only goal.

7. Divide and conquer, in the second sense. We have learned now how America dies: the electorate becomes divided based on education and intelligence, leaving the morons who will always have greater numbers to control the levers of a power they can never understand or use responsibly. We have to split the morons back between the parties, thus nullifying them at least half the time if not more.

8. Govern to benefit ourselves. Stop squandering our energy and sympathy on pigs, they don't deserve it. Craft policies that extend our power and tamp down the power of those important power centers that immediately threaten us. Protect and empower intellect; weaken and disunify stupidity whatever its political flavor.

9. Stop trying to save people who are actively destroying their own lives. Stop trying to save their children. Humans who are raised by animals realize their humanity and if they are also energetic they leave them and join us on their own terms. It is a necessary right of passage, like being the smart kid in a religious school who comes to knowledge first by rejecting the idiocy around her. That new blood will keep us from stagnating -- it will always be new energy to shake us from our lazy habits, and it will take us the places we will have become too insulated to understand.

10. For f-ck's sake, be self-confident. We are the heirs to and the origin of every good idea humanity has ever had. We are the thinkers, the artists, the scientists. While there are plenty of engineers who are animals there are still plenty among us, and we easily can tell the difference in the workplace. Advance our own. Ignore the rest. Power is tribal -- it's time we became aware of our tribe.

Problem is, unlike with Republicans, if the Democrats don't deliver on their promises, the voters just kick them out the next time. "You never did 'nuthin' for me."

No matter how much you did, it's always, well, you promised, and then didn't do anything to help me. Look at Biden's term for just an example. Maybe the best economy we've had for forty years, but all those uninformed voters didn't feel like it was, or they'd rather listen to the guys who tell them that no, it's lousy.
