That's why there was talk about the 5-seed being customized for Notre Dame:

- Home Opening Round game
- Weakest team in playoff (#12)
- Facing the lowest Bye team (#4)

It’s set up to be that, but it is technically possible for 2+ mid majors to get the auto bids. If Army had beaten ND there might’ve been some interesting discussions.

How are S Florida, Western Ky, and D1aa Mercer so strong? Add in a relatively weak Wisconsin.

Given who bama plays out of conference, the rest must play an amazing schedule top to bottom for them to be as good as you suggest- that’s the only way the SEC as a conference can be so strong that the conference is so good as claimed. Georgia played Tenn Tech, UMass, GT, and Clemson- that’s not bad, I suppose. At least it was another playoff team. TN can count SC St, nobody else. So where is the “power”.

Everyone focuses on non-conference but Alabama played 6 top 25 teams this year. Georgia played six as well.
