  • What happened to Music thread?

I figured there was a new one after the old got shut down in the purge of over a 1000 post threads?

Anyway been watching Steely Dan concerts remastered and in HD on YouTube, fantastic stuff. Then came the Dukes of September at the Lincoln center in 2012. Wish I would have been there, basically Steely Dans back up musicians, Boz Scaggs, Donald Fagen, Micheal McDonald singing there own stuff and some R and B classics.
I swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell.

There are some talented and swinging Steely Dan homage bands out there. They are turning out to be one of the most influential bands of all time.

I thought Boz Scaggs was 60 in 1975, which would make him 110 now.

I have been mainlining Louie Armstrong on Pandora. He seems to have three phases:

Early: Storyville sound, accompaniment to fast, fun piano compositions that sound like Fats Waller. Heavy New Orleans references. Very ****, still within the band choral wall of sound, but clean, painrterly, and precise. "Black and Blue"

Middle: Distinctive freeform solos, scat, American songbook deep cuts, Ella. Extremely confident bandleader. Prime performances. Very deep and moody, not at all schmaltzy yet. "Azalea"

Late: Lots of harps and strings; mawkish, step-n-fetchit vocals. "Wonderful World" Except for the collaboration with Ellington which is a throwback and lovely. "Duke's Place"

I'm pretty sure their Renaissance is due in large part to John Mulaney and Nick Kroll's "Oh Hello" Broadway comedy bit.
