  • SCOTUS: sponsored by Harlan Crow

Sounds like a few Dems are letting it be known they’d like Sotomayor to retire now.

She won't. The arrogance of certain people in power will never allow them to step down even if they have health issues that would warrant it.

I am sorry but the stupidity of the argument that we should force people to retire before they are ready is proof the Supreme Court is ridiculous. Forcing retirement on someone just so your guy can make a Supreme Court nomination was wrong when Trump did it and it is wrong with Biden doing it.

I get it...but it is proof the system itself is broken.

Yet, Kennedy had no issues doing it. Despite how libs love him he was still a Republican through and through and wanted Kavenaugh to replace him instead of some liberal.

Sotomayor isn't RBG - having Type 1 diabetes that is well managed isn't the same as having cancer multiple times. She's also about 10 years younger, so it's not the same immediacy.

But since we know the GOP doesn't play fair (otherwise either Garland would be on the court or Barrett would not), I have no problems with the Dems acknowledging it is an issue.

It's about third or fourth on the list of problems with the Supreme Court, but sure.

Nine 20-year terms, staggered every 2 off-election years; begin in 2025 with the oldest sitting justice. Problem solved.

18-year terms, but yes. And then they become a circuit court justice thereafter so it doesn't violate the constitution.

I'm fine with pressuring her to retire. I agree probability of her dying is relatively low, but the consequences are enormous.

If you truly believes that it's important to maintain a liberal voice on the court, it's perfectly fine to voice an opinion that a justice should step down.

Aside from the country being ****ed if trump wins, we'd see a refresh of the conservative olds on the court. I would think Thomas steps down near the end of that term and alito probably 50:50.

If we're going to survive, we need to learn from past mistakes.

Yeah. Constitution says they hold their jobs for life. Doesn't say they can't be reassigned to different duties.

If we learned from mistakes, we would have added 10 liberal Justices the day after Biden took office.
